The "change of Status" is issued to reservists who have completed any form of active duty. Sort of like going from "part time" to "full-time" then visa versa.

Kerry went in as a reservist, did Active time (full time) changed his status back to part time. At the end of his Reservist Career, there wouldn't be a 214. It a nice little letter stating "thank you for your Time"

"CASUALTIES: FRIENDLY - WIA - JOHN F. KERRY, USNR... ENS THORSON, EUGENE K, USN... ENEMY: NONE

Easy, folks. Here's a translation:

Our guys, Kerry and Thorson, were wounded in action. No enemy is being reported having been wounded or killed.

This doesn't say that there was no enemy present.

No, you're right. It says at the link in post 50:

Page 3 of action report (at top):

.... THREE PERSONNEL IN BLACK PAJAMAS WERE SPOTTED DUCKING BEHIND BANK ON PORT SIDE OF PCF 94. THIS UNIT RECEIVED SMALL ARMS/RIFLE GRANADE FIRE AND OINC AND THORSON ENS RECEIVED SHRAPNEL WOUNDS. ALL UNITS PROCEEDED OUT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENTS.

I was just confused about the "Friendly"

"A request to Drudge to quash is probably in order."

After reading the additional comments in this thread, I have to concur. I have emailed Drudge asking him to quash my original message.

One has to admit, though, that on the surface, this DD214 does look interesting and could be perceived as damaging. We all know that the Dems/Libs/Socialists in the Kerry camp have gone after our President with even lesser issues which the media loves to eat up.

But, now that I've read the analysis from my fellow FReepers who have better insight as to how the DD214 process works (or at least worked back during Vietnam), it's clear I jumped the gun so to speak a little too soon. ;-(

My father, while on lookout on a sub in ww2, mistook a sea gull for a plane, the sub crash dived, etc. It was later realized to be a gull and the skipper told him better to mistake a bird for a plane than the other way around! Thus, better to dig this up, examine it for ammunition, and at least have it on hand, then to pass it up. Good job.

Timothy McVeigh's box was also checked "Honorable"

Thanks for making my point!!! Unfortunately, his VN record is not going to matter, whether he lies, or it's shown what kind of character is made of. The MSM is NOT going to delve into his lies, but what they can not avoid is his senate record!

Now Rush is speculating about this irrelevant VN tour and the media looking into it's Kerry's credibility!

Thanks gunnygail. Great story!

And thank you for father's service during WWII.

Try and ease up a little. I get your point.

The Bush Team really (really, really) does not control the SwiftVets for Truth, and has nothing to do with the ads or the book Unfit for Command.

Besides, the pundits like Rush and whoever SHOULD continue to point out Kerry's numerous lies, whether on his claims of being a "secret CIA operative" or on his flip flops on renewable energy in the Senate.

To win, an entire package of offensive ads and issues must be used to take down the big Democratic lie machine.

The Swifties earned their right to free speech by spilling their own blood.

I heard John O'Neil yesterday state that Swiftboat Veterans for Truth can document that two of sKerry's three Purple Hearts were self-inflicted under situations of no enemy action. There are doubts as to the third (the second of the three)--it might well have been self inflicted, but the group couldn't document this conclusively; thus, they give sKerry the benefit of the doubt on this as they should.

What struck me is what a doofus sKerry is to accidentally frag himself at least twice in a three-month period (I've heard that in his four-month tour of duty, only three were spent in combat patrols). This guy is unbelieveably dorky. Do most 'Rats what a klutz of this magnitude sitting in the White House? I remember when the nation was stunned in the aftermath of 9/11--'Rats were falling all over themselves to proclaim their gratitude that Algore hadn't won in 2000. It didn't last long. They recovered from their shock, circled their wagons, and began their Bush bashing anew. But, deep down, can they really respect and support sKerry once they enter the voting booth?

I do not deny their right or responsibility to speak up on the issue, however it is distracting to keep it in the forefront because it is not going to matter to those that vote. It's been almost 30 years and the vets have spoken up numerous times about JK's short comings and deceivement. The MSM is making them look like they HATE JK, not trying to inform and save the electorate from voting for this prick!

Is that so hard to understand? Everyone has flaws in their character at some point, but to be perceived as harping on it makes it look so evil and petty, especially so close to an election. I would not be even discussing this if the MSM was fair and balanced, but that's not what we are dealing with. You and I both know unless they want Kerry gone or the piblic demand it, would they be willing to report fairly and ask Kerry the questions that we have all asked...(Name the MSM outlets that have brought up Cambodia thus far?) There is going to be no speculation by the MSM as to whether or not Kerry is credible.

So as people waste valuable resourses on Kerry's dubious VN duty, which BTW, he led everybody in that direction, the direct focus takes away from what is going to matter when people go into the voting boths in Nov.

I'm telling you the ONLY thing that matters to voters in the middle, the ones he's trying to get to vote for him, is his HONORABLE discharge! And he knows it!

Here's a new one for you. I posted the text of all 3 silver star citations.
I'm wondering why the latter two excluded the details,
and of course why one was issued a decade or more later than the others.

I found this thread while searching for Kerry's  DD214 to check out and save the Silver Star with the combat "V" before it disappeared.  Difficulty in linking to the site led me to check Google where I found  the DD215 that corrects his separation date to 3/1/70 (as well as changes in citations).  I thought the separation date change might be related to his VVAW activities.    I may have missed this info or it may not be significant, but wanted to make sure others were aware of it.

Don't worry about the troll thing, you're clearly not.

I have seen a little discrepancy in terminology in your post and a couple of others though.

You post and others have referred to "the second page." To be more technically correct, it's "the second DD-214."

Kerry went into the Navy as an enlistee, went through his basic training and officer training, then was discharged as an elisted man; DD-214 #1.

He was then commissioned as an officer and a second DD-214 was issued when he was discharged.
