So this is not relevant to the time he spent in Vietnam?

That happens regularly on that website.

Page 2, Page 2!

What about page 2? I don't see anything interesting on it. In 1970 he was released from active duty to the reserves. He was active for about 3 years including 1 year 7 months as "foreign and/or sea service" and got a few awards. Other than the 3 purple hearts there were no specifics on his injuries.

This just isn't a smoking gun.

Surely he could have gotten a couple of purple hearts in OCS if he had tried hard enough!

Guys, calm down. When Kerry signed up for the Navy, he enlisted. Then he went to training and Officer Candidate School. When, in 1966 (the year this document is dated), he graduated from OCS, Kerry was discharged as an enlisted man, hence the DD-214, so that he could accept a commission as an officer.

Every officer who's been in ROTC, or gone through OCS, has a DD-214 just like this.

I have learned to download and save them all. Getting a google cache address can do wonders as well.

Except that the UCMJ says within its text that it only applies to Reservists when active.

From the dates and the reason for separation shown on the 214, it doesn't appear this is the final 214 for Kerry, but rather one issued on his separation from enlisted duty, and possibly before his tour - such as it was - in RVN. If so, he hadn't received a wound -such as it was - by then. Then again, maybe I misread it.

Because there are no specifics to the wounds recieved, that would have been annotated on block 27 of the first page, instead, it reads "not applicable"....There were no "wounds" big enough to annotate.

Yes, but going from ROTC to OCS, how many Purple hearts did you earn?

So this is not relevant to the time he spent in Vietnam?

I don't know for sure, but I don't think so. It looks like there are two separate Service Data sections, both followed by VA data and authentication. The first applies to OCS and the second applies to Active Duty. The "Not Applicable" is part of the first Service Data section, so it does not look like it applies to Vietnam.

To look at it another way, when the officer signs off on the Authentication Section, all of the data above that line should be complete. The first Authentication, which is below Line 27, would have been completed before Kerry went to Vietnam.

Now, I have no specialized knowledge of Military forms, but that is my take. Maybe some of our military-experienced FReepers can offer a more authoritative opinion.

True. Awards for valor and other other personal awards have Gold Stars/Oak Cluster for subsequent awards.

Another point is that the edition dates for the forms are strangley different.

page one is: 1 Nov 55

page two is: 1 Jul 56

Something for an investigator to check up on. Why a reedition?

My son is only recently out of the military. Believe me, everyone KNOWS who is 'connected'. They are pretty much untouchable no matter their conduct.
