This is clearly an interim DD214, not his final one. Notice the total service time listed. It's much less than his total time in service. This was issued very early in his time in the Navy. It looks like a 'change-of-status' release when he went from one type of reserve status to another.

The "change of Status" is issued to reservists who have completed any form of active duty. Sort of like going from "part time" to "full-time" then visa versa.

Kerry went in as a reservist, did Active time (full time) changed his status back to part time. At the end of his Reservist Career, there wouldn't be a 214. It a nice little letter stating "thank you for your Time"
