A Florida man, who allegedly stopped along Interstate 64 near Williamsburg to inject himself with cocaine, attempted to run down a companion Thursday before plowing his pickup into a car, police said.
Sgt. D.S. Carr , a state police spokesman, said Alan T. Bowen , 45, of Homosassa , Fla., was heading west on I-64 about 2:30 p.m. when he pulled off at Exit 238 , near Camp Peary.
While stopped on the exit ramp, he injected himself in the hip with cocaine, Carr said. He then pulled back onto the highway, and after traveling about three-tenths of a mile, he started convulsing and passed out, Carr said.
A passenger and co-worker, identified as Tushomi Wallace, of Lumberton, N.C., first attempted to awaken Bowen.
Wallace struggled to maneuver the 2004 Ford 250 pickup, which was pulling a trailer, to the shoulder.
Bowen regained consciousness but became delusional and attacked Wallace with a screwdriver, Carr said.
Wallace grabbed Bowens cellular phone and jumped out of the pickup. He started walking west on the interstate.
Bowen then followed Wallace and attempted to run over him, Carr said.
Wallace was not injured, but the pickup collided with a 2000 Toyota mini-van driven by Thomas B. Schott of Springfield.
The pickup then became stuck in the median, facing east toward westbound traffic.
Trooper R. S. Eveland arrived at the crash site about one minute later. He found crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia in the pickup, Carr said.
The pickup was impounded and towed to the Williamsburg office of the state police, where a dog trained to locate drugs was walked around it. The dog alerted and a subsequent search found marijuana, Carr said.
Bowen was arrested and is being held at the Peninsula Regional Jail on charges of possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, attempted malicious maiming, assault and battery, driving under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana and reckless driving.
Tony Montana?
The War on Drugs is Evil (/sarcasm) Bump
See, drugs don't hurt anyone...
I wonder if this guy even knew where he was.
No one would Evvvvvvvver consider using them and then driving. Because that's what we've been told as drug users are RESPONSIBLE (h-ha-ha), not like those low-lifes who drink. Harrumph!
See! See! All we need to have done was to legalize marijuana and he'd have been mellow... (roll eyes)
