McGreevey the Victim, not the Perp: Good Morning America Spins for the Gov
Good Morning America; Early Show; Today Show

Posted on 08/13/2004 4:37:50 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Good Morning America? Aren't these threads supposed to focus on liberal bias at The Today Show? Well, yes, but with Today shifting so much of its attention to hyping the Olympics, it seemed like a better bet to focus on the other morning shows to get their take on the McGreevey scandal.

And when it came to liberal bias, ABC's Good Morning America didn't disappoint. What was their fundamental spin on the situation? Corruption in NJ? The secret gay life of the Governor? Of course not. Instead, McGreevey was essentially portrayed as the victim in this sordid affair.

On screen during most of the segment was the graphic "Gay Blackmail Scandal?"

So the scandal wasn't that McGreevey was gay, or possibly corrupt. Nope, the real scandal is that he was potentially the victim of blackmail. Cry me a river!

In to discuss the matter was an old crony named George Zoffinger. He had nothing to say of substance other than to murmur sympathetically. He did add one unintentionally comic touch, suggesting that, until very recently, McGreevey's wife had no idea that he was gay. Of course not.

One interesting sidenote. Zoffinger mentioned that McGreevey's father is a former Marine drill sergeant. One can imagine what it must have been like for him to stand there during yesterday's press conference.

In fairness, Diane Sawyer did cluck disapprovingly over McGreevey's appointment of Golan Cipel to NJ's homeland security post despite his lack of any qualifications for the job.

Flipping channels, CBS' Early Show had reporter Jake Tapper (ex of liberal webzine Salon) on to discuss the scandal. And to his credit, he suggested that basically McGreevey was just trying to get out in front of bigger scandals to come.

I flipped to Today briefly, just in time to catch Chris Matthews opine that McGreevey had handled things well.

Oh, and one last bit of comic relief. One of the shows (my remote was moving fast but I think it might have been the Early Show) featured a classic political hack, a Democrat member of the NJ state legislature.

As FReepers are aware, if McGreevey had made his resignation effective prior to Sep. 15th, it would have triggered a special election on Nov. 2nd, giving the Republicans a real shot to win back the governor's seat and potentially putting the presidential race into play. So instead McGreevey chose to resign effective Nov. 15th, ensuring there would be no election and that the Dem head of the state Senate would automatically take over.

In any case, the Dem hack managed to keep, um, a straight face while claiming that there were no politics involved in setting the resignation date, and that the additional time was necessary to assure "a smooth transition." Good one!

Just for the record, I now recall that it was Matt Lauer of Today who interviewed the NJ Dem hack who managed not to crack up while claiming that politics were not behind McGreevey's decision to delay his resignation till Nov. 15th.

His chosen lifestyle trumps everything.

At least to the liberal media.

Makes you wonder why they didn't celebrate John Wayne Gacy.

I want to know why he had his parents stand there. They were publicly humiliated for his photo-op of a united family.

The whole thing is very weird, beginning with his wife. Did she know? If so, she is an accomplice in his fraud on the people of New Jersey.

If she didn't know, then why was she standing there smiling? I would have been crying and in seclusion.

The whole thing is just weird.

Oh gawd. I saw his live announcement yesterday. Never heard of the guy before but the moment he opened his mouth, I knew he was going to out himself. Just think, if he'd just kept his pants zipped, he'd not be such an embarrassment to his family and he'd not be in such hot water. But, like others he did it "because he could".

Notice that no one is concerned for the taxpayers of NJ who paid for his non-qualified lover's govt. job (head of NJ Homeland Security no less!).

What a mega-insult! IMO the governor gave the people of NJ the rasberries big time.

Well, even she didn't know before she knew right before they took the podium. And she still stood there. I have as little respect for her as I do for him.

BTW, the media reports I've been hearing suggest that there've been rumors about McSleazy's sexual habits for years. Did a lot of folks in NJ suspect, or did the media ever so kindly keep that info to themselves, a la what they tried to do for Toon?

Interesting "spin" !

I don't suppose anyone mentioned the fact the Guv is being sued by his imported lover,Golan Cipel, for sexual harassment-with details of the allegations to be publicly available momentarily ??

If she is a Hillary type, she may not care as long as she does not get hurt politically. Does anyone know if she is politically ambitious?

On the other hand, she may be thinking that she will get the house, cars, etc in the divorce settlement.

I would like to know a few things. For one, did this guy who was blackmailing the Gov. actually do anything for the Homeland Security Dept? If not, then doesn't that say something about a Governor who would take public money intended for Homeland Security and endanger the public by using it instead it to pay off his gay lover?

In that case, shouldn't both McGreevy and his lover be required to repay that money?

If that was going on, then why didn't someone else in the NY governmental apparatus blow the whistle? It couldn't be because the entire government is occupied by Democrats who are getting fat off the taxpayer, and who have no interest in ratting on each other, could it?

The whole family is just being "good little troopers" for the partisan cause. You would think that they would be numb, but I thought the same would be the case for Nick Berg's dad. Apparently for many lib/dems, cynical political moves trump normal human emotions.

I long for the day when a guy says, "I am a gay American" and a reporter has the gonads to say, "You mean you're a HOMOSEXUAL?"

Did she [his wife] know?

Despite the risible claim to the contrary by McGreevey's crony, I find it hard to believe she didn't know long ago. This is a 47-year old man, not a kid discovering his identity. His former marriage ended in divorce. Can't we assume she knew why before marrying him?

And, not to delve too deeply into personal matters, but I note that McGreevey flatly described himself as gay, not bisexual. This would seem to have some pretty strong implications for their private life that would surely lead a wife to wonder and ask questions about what wasn't happening between them.

Yes, of course she knew.

She has helped him cover-up his trysts with his boyfriends. (See the "broken leg" incident).
