With Corzine's support growing over weekend, senator reportedly agrees to run in special election
With U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine signaling he will answer his party's call to run for governor in a special election this year, key Democratic leaders are intensifying their efforts to persuade Gov. James E. McGreevey to quit immediately and clear the way the senator's candidacy.
Three of the state's leading Democratic power brokers this week are planning to call on McGreevey to resign within the next three weeks instead of waiting until Nov. 15, three high-level party officials said yesterday.
Middlesex County leader John Lynch and South Jersey Democrat George Norcross III plan to reach out to McGreevey and urge him to resign before Sept. 3, the officials said, which would set the stage for voters to elect a new governor in a Nov. 2 special election. They are upset that McGreevey's time frame would make Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) the acting governor for 14 months.
U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez (D-13th Dist.) -- who hopes to take Corzine's Senate seat if he becomes governor -- has made it known to state and national party leaders that if the governor does not act, he will call a news conference as early as Wednesday to demand his resignation immediately, two of the Democratic officials said.
The groundswell for a Corzine candidacy in a special election built this weekend in the wake of McGreevey's stunning admission on Thursday that he had a sexual affair with another man. His aides say the man, former gubernatorial aide Golan Cipel, tried to extort millions of dollars from McGreevey. But Cipel accused McGreevey of repeatedly making unwanted sexual advances, then offering him hush money.

What kind of fools live in the Garden State that they would continue in office this cabal of corrupt political whores? Even the liberal newspapers might look in the mirror and ask who promoted the present condition or, if not promoted, condoned by turning a blind eye to the obvious corruption.
Danny Kaye in "The Inspector General" came to mind...
I would remind you that dead people vote, too.
Corzine is such a sweet guy....reluctantly agreeing to be NJ's next Governor. Oh, wait...there's an election? Nah...just a pesky little detail.
The most important thing conservatives must do it unite behind a candidate. Then that candidate has to run against the corruption of our state. Whoever we put foward has to make sure that Corzine is painted with the same brush as the rest of corrupt democratic machine.
The Democrats want to keep the governorship by riding on John F*ckin's coattails. After all, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity in New Jersey to put in a fresh liberal face. If Jon Corzine wins, he names a Democrat to keep his seat til the 2006 election.
Getting Corzine out of the Senate would be a plus for the rest of us who don't live in NJ.
I believe you are mistaken. The Dems calling for his resignation are back-stabbing traitors who were bought by the evil Bush conspiracy. This is NOT the vast right wing conspiracy - it is a new and more malevolent bunch. Cutting taxes, failing to dialogue with terrorists, and other evil characteristics distinguish this new phenomenom. All Hail, Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Clinton!
Impeach the SOB!
When I was pastoring in Hudson County (my first pastorate) our church chairman always reminded the church folk the Sunday before election day to vote early and vote often. Back then I thought he was joking . . .
The GOP machine is dominated by liberals and is just as corrupt. Republican primary voters who pick a conservative can count no help from the party bosses, who will on their hands again to ensure a Democratic victory.
Please note that a trademark has already been applied for the phrase 'evil Bush conspiracy'.
From what my (GOP) family tells me in NJ... the GOP has yet to field a viable candidate. That's a bigger problem in a largely blue state.
NJ Freepers? What's the scoop? Getting him out is only half the battle.
Mea culpa....you are s-o-o-o-o right. LOL.
I just don't get that.
Yes, I would shed no tears if Corzine got elected governor since that would get him out of the Senate. Of course whatever Dem replaces him would probably be no better.
Here's a thought: Let Torricelli run! It's been 2 whole years and surely he's redeemed himself by now. Ha ha.
I think Republicans may be better off if McG stays til Nov. This gives Bret Schundler more time to be ready to run in 2005. Plus with McG's ugly ethical troubles in the news during the campaign season, it may dispirit the Dems and keep Kerry's numbers down a bit.
(Sniffle) Corzine is just a "victim" (sob).
Evil Bush conspiracy? You mean the guys who drives around in his RV with is dog in the baked bean commercial?
I can see it now...he's waging a war of extreme flatuence against the Dems. Keep them in the bathrooms so they can't vote! Eureka! Sheer brilliance!
