People always think Im putting them on when I mention the Lesbian Avengers, but they are in fact a real group. Or were, anyway. One of the most entertaining stories I was ever asked to cover was the kickoff of the Lesbian Avengers Pride Ride through the South in Vidor, Texas, which had been chosen because of some high-profile Klan activity which the Avengers wanted to protest. The Avengers had planned a motorcycle convoy, but most of them were womens studies professors and other tenured types, and mostly drove minivans and Subarus, and the only diesel power in sight belonged to a few rusty old Volvos. There were one or two actual motorcycles of the high-CC Hawg variety, but it was more of your suburban-type convoy.
Volvos aside, the Avengers were done up in full terrorist chic, with hoods and ski-masks and bandanas tied over noses, and the bandanas were breathily puffed up as angry lesbian slogans were shouted, &c. There were combat boots in evidence, and little taped up rolls of quarters to give extra oomph to fists flailing in furious lesbian vengeance, and the whole crowd was basically ready to lesbianiacally rumble and was all but openly begging for a visit from the Klan or the Man or some symbol of homophobia or hetero-type authority. Some scene.

(my standard lesbian joke)
I had a lesbian boss once. She was actually a very nice and likable person. Butch to the end, tho.
Whenever she had a big date and was ready to go out on the town I would warn her, "Don't do anything I wouldn't do - Whoops! Sorry! I forgot you CAN'T!" It didn't make any sense, but she knew what I meant.
Damn. (wincing) Why do they have to do that? I'm scared to death that someone is going to see me driving my Outback station wagon and think I'm a lesbian. My teenage daughter even refers to it as "the Lesbo-mobile." This is terrible. Can't lesbians confine themselves to some kind of liberal cars, like Yugos?
