The Shahab-3 experiment in Iran was for a testing of a new Chinese navigation system (translation)

Translation from Hebrew to English by me:

Intellgience sources in the west said that the aim of the military experiment last week in Iran was a testing of a new Chinese navigation system that was installed in the Shahab-3 missiles.

In their words, the drill that took place August 11 was simulating an emergency situation. The heads of the Iranian defense appartus that were present during the drill ordered the commander to launch the missile. The alert status was raised at the military base near the city of Aisfehan (not sure about spelling), the Shahab-3 was placed on teh launcher, the navigation system was started, but the missile was not launched.

The Iranians, it has been told, are very proud of the accuracy of the missile. A few days ago one of the Revolutionary heads of Iran said the missiles could hit nuclear sites in Israel.

Shahab in Persian means a falling star or meteor.

The AA appartus head in the Israeli Air Force said a few weeks ago to the Knesset that the Israeli Arrow Missile System cannot at this time protect against those Shahab-3 missiles.

Why not?

He said that the Arrow does not at this time provide enough protection against those missiles. Right now they can only protect against SCUDS and long range Katyushas.

I wonder if this will make Israel change their mind about selling so much military equipment to China?? (Israel is the 2nd largest supplier of military hardware to China, second only to Russia.)

It should also make us rethink all that military aid to Israel. They get our technology, then resell it to China. Convenient. As I consider America and Israel to be the best of allies, I would hope that Israel would reconsider this selling of their (and our) national security to a nation who is without a doubt our greatest threat.

They should rethink their relationship with China, indeed. Some US related items that Israel wants to use for export are usually in need of US approval.

Though Israel could state many of your arguments in terms of US armaments and foreign aid to Egypt (Egypt gets the second most foreign aid from the US) and the rest of the Arab world (including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Palestinian Authority etc.) which are all bent on pusing Israel into the sea.

meant to say "pushing" not "pusing"

Israel is daring Iran to try.

Israel has pretty much stopped all arms sales to China-back in 2001 infact.Pressure from the US & Chinese sale of weapons to Iran,Syria etc all played a part in their decision.Their biggest arms buyer now is India.

The Shahab-3 is reported to be three or four times faster than the Scuds the Arrow system has been tested against. One common mistake on FR (and even more so among the general population) is to assume that all ballistic missiles are equal. They are definately not. Some are far faster than others, and are thus much more difficult to intercept.
