I used to like Hackworth. He was on a lot during the Kosovo aggression. I liked listening to him, and I thought he was a cool guy, but then I also used to like Ross Perot.
But since Hackworth came out against the Iraq war, I haven't felt the same about him. It certainly wasn't the position I expected him to take. But like all celebrities, he's doing the Jerry Springer: Find out how you can get the most attention, and you will make the most money. This is his schtick now. He's just trying to extend his minutes of fame. I really don't want to help him any by commenting, because this thread is an extension of his fame. The more we talk about him, the better it is for him.
Anyway, I am certainly glad that I never was on the Hackworth Cheerleading Squad.
Influence, schminfluence. If he did, then what the heck? Why shouldn't a father's influence be a help to someone? His father was also sticking his neck out for the boy. I know my dad had little influence, but he also had a lot less to lose. And another thing: His father's influence had just a little effect on me voting for him. So he got the position of President through his father's influence, too.
My tour at Tuy Hoa AFB RVN saw several Air Guard squadrons of F-100 aicraft flown & maintained by guardsmen from Niagra Falls, New York and units from New Mexico.I worked along side these fine airmen. Hackworth is a POS. He slanders all Vetnam vets if he takes Kerry's postion.
Thankyou for the education. Thats the most plausible explanation about the man, I've ever heard. Makes total sense.
I guess voting for Al Gore puts one on the right? Face it Hack, the SwiftVets are not all republicans, nor all democrats. As their name indicates, they just want the truth about John Kerry to come out. Kerry is the one who made an issue of his service. The lies he told PO'd a bunch of his former comrades, and so they want to set the record staight. That doesn't even say anything about how they individually felt about the Vietnam war. Just how they feel about the individual, John Kerry.
President Bush flew a dangerous F-102 on immediate callup in the Cold War and volunteered for Nam duty. Thats true Courage and now he is demonstrating His Courage and Leadership as a Heroic Commander-In-Chief. Every National Guard Veteran has earned Our Total Respect.
The other candidate has vetted a diatribe of Monday Morning Quarterback, and literally supported both sides of EVERY Issue so far at one time or another. The Swiftee's who tried to command him are doing Our Nation a Great Service stepping forward to illuminate the Real Character thirty five years ago. God Bless Our Country and Our Great President George W. Bush!!!
That's something I've been wondering about. That is if the transfer from the -44 to the -94 also involved a transfer accross unit lines, which you've just indicated that it did,
Of course what I'm thinking is that JFK was "volunteered" by the CO of COSDIV 13 to get rid of him. Don't know that of course, but given Kerry's fitness reports, I wouldn't be suprised. It could also be that the transfer was seen as "giving him another chance" after a "bad relationship" with the previous CO.
Not that I don't believe you but can you provide a source for this info. I have regular correspondence with a demented left-wing wacko Liberal (excuse the redundancy) and I would love to lay a trap for him. Or her. Or it.
Didn't O'Neil take over the -94 boat after JFK didi-bopped out of there? Seems that would make him a Brown Water Navy warrior as well, would it not.
What little respect I had left for Hack, is now gone. That's makes me sad, because at one time I had a lot of it.
The info you posted comes from the Nixon tapes. It indicates that Nixon and associates had conversations regarding Kerry, his apparent communist sympathizer activities and involvement with VVAW.
At the time, and since, O'Neil was the only one with any balls to come out against Kerry when all of us were trying to blend into the woodwork and forget Vietnam. (I too was one of those)
I vividly recall having almost covert veterans meetings on my college campus where we quietly spoke with each other about the issue and tried not to bring attention to ourselves for fear of reprisals from the anti-war crowd who often lost all sense of decency and respect with vets.
Thank God for Reagan who finally gave us back our pride.
O'Neil got their attention, but they did not and could not use him politically. He would have none of that from the very beginning. O'Neil said this was a personal issue at the start and has never wavered from that. I see it as a personal issue also.
The only people who see this as political are the Kerry supporters who automatically label everything as a political attack.
This is a personal attack.
Very personal!
yes on all counts.
Bush failed a med exam regarding his teeth or some such thing that put him on hold when he made the attempt.
A bit later on, pilots were not a critical assett and were beginning to get ROF'd. He missed the opportunity window and decided to finish up his remaining service and then work for the political campaign.
He was likely petty bored at the time, I sure would have been. There is documentation on this somewhere. I will see if I can find what I have.
gilliam posted a link but if you have a different source that would be fine. I look forward to dog-piling on this guy.
And I wonder if Hackworth in hindsight might wish there were those who questioned LBJ's Silver Star a little bit.
