In an op-ed piece in yesterday's USA Today (what, there are no newspapers in New Jersey?), Gov. Jim McGreevey attempted to defend the indefensible: his refusal to resign immediately and permit the voters to elect their next governor.
If he leaves office before Sept. 3, there will be a special election for an interim governor. If he stays until Nov. 15, as he insists he must, New Jersey will have an unelected chief executive until January '06.
Still draping himself in the mantle of humility, McGreevey says he must remain to oversee "an orderly transition of power." Hogwash. New Jersey may have its political problems, but there is no threat of a military coup, no danger that Trenton will fall to barbarians if Lame Duck Jim quacks his last in a few weeks rather than a few months.
The gov also writes: "In two weeks, New Jersey will again play a central role in ensuring the security and preparedness of America during the Republican National Convention in New York." And that requires McGreevey's personal attention how? As he astutely notes, the convention is in New York, not Newark. But there could be other reasons, outside the realm of politics, behind his insistence on remaining until November. This is pure speculation, but consider:
He has weeks to kill until Barney's late-autumn sale.
Needs more time to finish reading Machiavelli's "The Prince."
Golan Cipel is demanding more than 15 minutes of fame.
By November, all the shore resorts will be shuttered and he'll have a better excuse for refusing that hot dog vendor's job in Seaside.
Still waiting to hear if he has been accepted at Touro College.
Still waiting to hear if he has been accepted by "The Apprentice."
Division of Tourism needs time to replace all those happy-family ads the McGreeveys filmed.
Tony Soprano is insistent.
Gubernatorial E-ZPass is good through Nov. 15.
He could pardon one more Thanksgiving turkey.
Wants to avail self of front-row ticket to Bette Midler's "Kiss My Brass" concert in Atlantic City in October.
President Bush is begging him to stay, since the longer he's in Trenton, the more animosity there is against the Democrats.
Lots more hotties to interview for jobs.

Keep him around a while. It helps to feed the scandal. Keeps it in the news.
I agree with you. The old "twist slowly in the wind" concept. It seems like we've all reversed sides on McGreevey's resignation. In the first day or so, all the Dems wanted him to stay around and our side wanted him out immediately. Now I think we see the advantages of having him up there like a pinata for a few months.
Why won't he go?
Easy. George Bush may be prez, but this is the Age of Clinton. Wrap yourself in the mantle of someone just following one's natural sexual urges and you can get away with murder. You become a hero and anything else you may be responsible for evaporates into the ether.
I agree...otherwise I'm going to have to order another Vanity Plate
Why do the people in N.J. want to pay him for 5 more mins???
Kick him out.
Stay McGreevey stay!
'rats are criminals by nature. Whatever this pervert is doing, is to help his perverted party. They have no scruples or morals. They are probably too involved shooting beastiality porno flicks to attend to the voters at this time.
Don't question them. They know what's best.
Blessings, Bobo
The next week DAmino showed up with McGreevy who said in an off-handed manner, "I hear that you're reading the "Prince" by Machiavelli!"
The farmer was wired by the FBI but the indictment only mentioned that DAmino and a "high ranking state official had spoken with the farmer regarding the extortion.
I suspect that McGreevy will get more than he bargained for when he puts on those prison stripes! Of course, he'll be more than willing to drop the soap in the shower!!! The Dimbulbs are livid and there's not a thing they can do!
Anyone watch Lou Dobbs tonight? He got a bit curt with the reporterette who said McGreevey should get some credit for vowing to get some important work done before he leaves office in 90 days. The only response she had was: "Good point." :-)
The longer he stays, the better it is for Bush IMO. I think New Jersey is going to be a squeeker, W may not win, but Kerry is going to be sweating it out.
The only way McGreevey leaves office before November 15 is if he's killed. Then again, we are talking about New Jersey. Anyone else hearing the Sopranos theme music?
Apparently they can't come to a decision on whether he's queer enough?
Good boy, Good boy!!
Maybe if McGreevey molested a few Boy Scouts he could be prime Dim presidential material.
The way news keeps breaking on this nothing seems impossible.
