Patrick Buchanan, the conservative commentator whose Republican primary challenge and divisive convention speech weakened the first President Bush's campaign for re-election in 1992, is publishing a book excoriating the second President Bush over the invasion of Iraq, just in time to grab a share of the limelight at another Republican convention.
In Where the Right Went Wrong, released late last week, Buchanan calls the invasion of Iraq "the greatest strategic blunder in 40 years, a mistake more costly than Vietnam. If prudence is the mark of a conservative, Mr. Bush has ceased to be a conservative," Buchanan wrote. The release of the book, which coincides with the Republican National Convention, gives Buchanan occasion to lay out his case on television and in book promotions just as the Bush campaign seeks to project an image of unity, reviving unhappy memories of the disruptive role Buchanan has played in the past.
"He has a following in conservative circles," said Paul Weyrich, a veteran conservative organizer. "It is not what it once was just because the religious right is not particularly enamored with him. But it is going to have an effect. In a very close election, criticism from anybody who is credible is going to have an effect."
In an interview, however, Buchanan said publishing a book during the campaign was the best way he knew to inject what he considers important ideas into the debate. "The reason I wanted it out now is, it addresses big issues that are not being addressed in this campaign: the massive and growing deficit, the disintegration of the culture and a Wilsonian foreign policy that means war ad infinitum," he said.

What are conservatives supposed to do? Just keep your mouth shut and not express opinions and vote whomever has an (R) in front of their name? Sometimes I wonder if you people would have voted for Clinton if he was a Republican.

As buchanan fully intended, this latest attack of his will make him semi-relevent again for a few moments in time. He's incapable of understanding that the media will give him attention only because he's useful to their goal and not because they believe his BS any more then anyone else.

Good news, the answer is VERY FEW. I don't recall the actual numbers but there weren't that many people who voted for the reform party candidate, even though his name was buchanan.

But you are being played by his minions. You believe the anti-immigrant crap they spew and repeat the same racist ideas without realizing how absurd they are.
Try repeating some of the things you read on FR about Mexicans on your job, at church, or in polite company and see how quickly you will feel like the turd in the punchbowl.

If you think Buchanan is doing something positive with this book, I'll also have that opinion.
I don't think it will have much, if any effect. However, I think his intent was evil. Just which candidate did he intend to help?
I am sure that buchanan will enrich himself, and that his book will be proudly displayed on some coffee tables along with Hillary and Michael Moore.
If you ever come across the book "In Search Of Deepthroat", pick it up. It makes a very strong case that Buchanan is Deepthroat, especially now that most of the other possible suspects are dead yet Burnstein still won't disclose the name because Deepthroat is still alive.
It would certainly be in character for buchanan...selling his own people out for personal gain. It might also explain how a third rate speech writer got his foot in the media door at a time when conservatives weren't that welcomed.
Also pro-homosexual, socialists, anti-Blacks, anti-Jews, and Anti-Mexican.
Why does everything have to boil down to helping or hurting Bush? People aren't allowed to express their opinions because it might hurt Bush? That's a ridiculous notion.
