O'Neill Dares Kerry: 'Sue Me'

Swiftboat Veterans for the Truth spokesman John O'Neill dared Sen. John Kerry on Sunday to sue him for libel if, as Kerry's presidential campaign maintains, key claims in O'Neill's book "Unifit for Command" are not true.

"I invite him to sue me for libel," O'Neill, who co-authored the overnight bestseller with Jerome Corsi, told WABC Radio's Monica Crowley. "If he was actually in Cambodia on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day he should sue me. If, in fact, those other five [Swift]boats, on March the 13, [1969], if they all fled like he did, instead of staying like he knows they did, he should sue me."

O'Neill continued:

"If he didn't wound himself with a grenade - causing sort of a rice-fanny wound - and then reported it to the Navy as a water mine - if he didn't do that on March 13th should sue me."

O'Neill issued the challenge after noting that Kerry's campaign has gone to extraordinary lengths to supress the information in "Unfit for Command."

"On our first [Swiftvet] ad, he had two huge lawfirms send letters to every [TV] station, threatening to sue the stations themselves" if they ran the ad, the former Swiftboat commander told Crowley.

"The next thing he did was challenge the book's publisher, Regnery, indicating he would sue them if they continued printing the book," he added.

The bestselling author said that while Regnery declined to stop printing "Unfit," it offered to republish Kerry's 1971 book "The New Soldier," which chronicles the top Democrat's anti-war protests with a group bankrolled by Jane Fonda.

Kerry has declined to have "New Solidier" republished over the years and reportedly bought up most of the available copies in 1972, after his opponent in a congressional race used it to paint him as anti-American.

Correct! Kerry is trying to deceive the public into believing Bush is controlling the SBV. It's not working.

> Kerry will file a suit. Drag this out for a while
> then drop it when it no longer matters.

O'Neil surely already has a plan in place for that.

The problem with sue&drop is: counter-suit.
Within hours of a Kerry suit, there'll be an O'Neil suit.

The original plaintiff cannot just drop the counter.
They have to settle with the defendant.

O'Neil will only settle for one offer:
Kerry drops out of presidential race.

From the National Review article about John O'Neill:

The first thing you need to know about John O'Neill is that the O'Neills were sea dogs through and through. Even today, there are some 90 first cousins living in and around Annapolis — home of the Naval Academy — many of them serving in America's fleets. O'Neill's grandfather taught at the Naval Academy; his father graduated in the early '30s, flew fighters, fought at Iwo Jima, and retired an admiral; O'Neill himself, who grew up in landlocked San Antonio, Texas, was in the Naval Academy Class of 1967 (two brothers also graduated, '57 and '59). An uncle, a fighter pilot, was killed at Pearl Harbor; another, also a naval pilot, in Korea. Several of O'Neill's nephews fought in the first Gulf War in the Marine Corps, and his brother-in-law commanded the Coast Guard, Atlantic Area. Nelson and Nimitz would have been proud of the O'Neills.

Seems like Kerry's buddies better tread carefully unless they want to open a great big can of swabby-style kick-@$$!

If Kerry does, it invites a countersuit that WON'T get dropped.

BINGO .... it would destroy Kerry.

Defamation of character, false accusations, slander ,..... ouch that's gonna need some ice.

I'm still looking for the time of its broadcast also. IIRC there was something about today around 5:00, but that'a just what I can remember off the top of my head. Look's like it's around that time now.

It might be cool to find a copy of the "Lucky Bag" from '67 and pick out his picture and contrast it with JFnK's yearbook picture from Yale.

> The whole tone of the Swift Vets strikes me as nasty.

Compared to what, Mathews beating up Malkin last week?

My impression is that the ads are extremely reserved.
Compare what they quoted to the full Kerry statement,
for example. They left out the electrodes.

The truth about Kerry is so ugly that there's no way
present it that doesn't have some element of "nasty".

When O'Neill was on Hannity & Colmes, Hannity asked him about his background and education, just to establish it.

It turns out O'Neill finished as No. 1 in his law school graduating class.

He is a sharp guy, I am sure his book is sue-proof.

If Kerry would sue, than O'Neill could subpoena Kerry's military records.

Boy, would I love to see that right around mid-October. :)

NOT a good idea. Kerry could start a lawsuit which would effectively exlude him from having to address the ISSUE. I think O'Neill screwed up on this.

Wrong. Lawsuits generally drag out for months, some even years. It would effectivly relieve Kerry of having to address anything IN or concerned with the lawsuit until AFTER the election.

O'Neill is relentless!

By the time everything is said and done, John Kerry will be the political version of Dresden.
