"Waldo Jeffers had reached his limit. It was now mid-August..."
Ummm . . . because she's fleeing an island prison? What do I win?
"Waldo trembled with anticipation..."
Stupid Clinton policy after Al Sharpton complained about Haitians being repatriated. The policy has been perpetuated by the Bush administration.
"2. Why do we have a double-standard regarding the millions of Cubans who have immigrated to the US (illegally, since they don't have visas) compared to the millions....."
By and large, Cubans that emigrate wind up getting educated, becoming better citizens, contributing to society, etc. Mexicans, Haitians look for the free meal ticket, free medical, etc.
So, what's the difference between fleeing communist Cuba and Socialist and corrupt Mexico? Or fleeing El Salvador? San Salvador?
I have no problem with trying to make a better life for yourself, or your family - and this isn't about ethnicity - it's about what you do when you get here.
Get legal immigrant status
Learn the language
Obey the laws
Get a job, pay your own way
If EVERYONE did these 4 simply things, there would be a HUGE increase in this country's economy. Sure, employers would have to pay more in salary, but there would be less going out in welfare, medicaid, etc.
Wonder if her box is large or tight?
I question the timing of this delivery.
If you don't see the difference, God help you.
Who cares about what brown can do for you, when DHL can special deliver freedom?
No doubt. I wonder what rate she got. (I could go to the DHL website and find out, but I'm too lazy).
Neither Mexico nor El Salvador shoot you when you try it.
So now, ask yourself...what kinds of places shoot you when you try to leave?
P.S. San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador.
Mexico is a free country.
Why would we grant asylum to a person from a free country?
Also, in regards to Vietnam and China, I don't know what our immigration policy is, but, there's certainly not a lack of them in the US.
Mexico is a free country.
Cuba is the most un-free country in the hemisphere.
That's the difference.
The Cubans who fled Castro in the 60's worked as janitors and busboys when they arrived here. Some of these folks now own banks and are the movers and shakers in Florida and other parts of the country. They came here to flee communism and didn't go on the dole like the millions of Mexicans who come here and increase the poverty rate.
"Neither Mexico nor El Salvador shoot you when you try it."
This furthers your point y claro que ya lo sabes, but neither Mexico Nor ES, nor even Venezuela (yet, to my knowledge) CARE if you leave, and you can even use official crossings if you have a passport.
I have never understood the reason the US imposed the dry-land/wet-land stay/deport rule for cubans. Cubans are an ASSET to the united states. Americans don't realize how lucky they are that their immigrant labor in general is hispanic (i.e. christian/catholic at least nominally with minimal if any fundamentalist tendencies, similar culture and vocabulary (not language) to north americans, no history of suicide attacks that I know of and none of terrorism outside of a couple of places, etc.) Look at the mess Europe is in with THEIR expanded labor pool.
Maybe we could just have all the women in Medellin come to Miami?
I didnt' realize that this was a recent clinton policy. I wonder why that W guy hasn't rescinded it.
She earned it...Welcome to America! Someone should invest in her first startup biz idea. The girl is tenacious if nothing else.
