Posted on 08/25/2004 11:36:49 AM PDT by GulliverSwift

Former Georgia Senator Max Cleland, left, and former Green Beret Lt. Jim Rassmann, center, approach a Secret Service Agent, right, on station at the check point to the entrance of President Bush (news - web sites)'s ranch Wednesday Aug. 25, 2004 in Crawford, Texas. Cleland tried to deliver a letter protesting ads challenging John Kerry (news - web sites)'s Vietnam service to President Bush at his Texas ranch Wednesday, but the Secret Service stopped Cleland short of his goal. "Cleland lost three limbs in an accident during a routine noncombat mission where he was about to drink beer with friends. He saw a grenade on the ground and picked it up. "

That's what I don't get. It was a live grenade to blow his legs and right arm off. Was he fragged? Did he knock it off his vest and not know the pin came out? It's a tragedy, but some important info is purposely being omitted.

Bush is wrong to condemn 527 ads. He was wrong to sign the McCain-Feingold bill into law. The USSC was wrong to uphold it.

But it sure makes Congress look foolish. And maybe this election will open some eyes about how screwed up Congress is, and that campaign finance regulations directed to speech are a BAD thing.

If they had accepted the letter, even if it was to stick it to the kerry camp, it would be akin to saying the issue deserved more consideration and action on the Presidents part.

Exactly right.

Plus, IMHO,they're trying to sandbag the President.

If he had accepted the letter, it would have been a tacit admission that he has influence over the Swift Vets for Truth, resulting in editorials to the effect all over the MSM.

No, Cleleand was refused entrance because he has publicly called Bush a TRAITOR, LIAR, AWOL, DRAFT DODGER, and COWARD! I think he was treated FAR more kindly than his a$$ deserved!!!

**If that's the case, they could've just faxed the letter.**

And save money too!

Cleland is so consumed with hatred it's a good thing for him that he's crippled. Otherwise, he'd probably have made a run for the ranch with a stick.

Cheap Publicity Stunt.

Where's your APPOINTMENT with the President, Cleland? Try that kind of stupid stunt down at the White House on the Pennsylvania Avenue/Lafayette Park entrance.

Look how they (the mainstream media who want Kerry elected) are trying to do EVERYTHING to create at set of PERIPHERAL "CLOUD ISSUES" that deal with everything EXCEPT THE SHOCKING NATURE OF THE SWIFT BOAT VET CHARGES AND WHETHER THEY ARE TRUE OR NOT, or to water down the central issue at hand.

I heard that he dropped the grenade, then tried to pick it up.

What a stupid, juvenile stunt! I don't think Dole will show up at one of Kerry's several palaces with a plea to get him to denounce Moveon.Org.

What the headlines would say in a truthful, ideal world:

KERRY SENDS HANDICAPPED MAN OUT IN 90-DEGREE HEAT TO FACE DOWN ADVERSARY WHOM HE HIMSELF IS AFRAID TO MEET DIRECTLY AND TALK THE ISSUE OUT

Isn't it simply amazing how this 'stupid cowboy from Texas' sees through all their attempts to trap him and ends up turning their contemptuous acts around on them.

I love it when liberal elitists are defeated by their own arrogant attitudes, with a little help from 'stupid cowboys from Texas'.

Maybe Bush wasn't home. Maybe he is heading to the Olympics. I haven't been around today to know where he is.

Maybe he was doing something more important like chopping wood or feeding his dog.

Your conclusion The Bush team has done the correct calculation I don't agree with [snip]

In an ideal world, with an objective visual reporting media I would agree with you. (I think we can agree this stunt has zero impact in print or talk radio.) I'd even agree with you if the positions of Kerry and Bush were reversed. But keep in mind, this isn't marketing. Bush can design content, but he can't expect reliable delivery. This makes politics much more difficult for Republicans than for Democrats.

But we're working on that...
