Cleland's Publicity Stunt Flops Trying again to divert attention from his repeated refusal to leash his multimillion-dollar 527 attack dogs, Sen. John Kerry sent chum Max Cleland to Crawford, Texas, to hand President Bush a letter attacking Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. But the Georgia Democrat never made it past the Secret Service. Cleland, a former one-term senator from Georgia, claimed: "The question is where is George Bush's honor. The question is where is his shame to attack a fellow veteran who has distinguished himself in combat. Regardless of the political combat involved, it's disgraceful." What's "disgraceful" is that the Democrats keep trying to pretend the president hasn't already denounced such attacks. Too bad the president didn't give Cleland a message asking Kerry once more to stop his attacks.

Cleland, who became a triple amputee in Vietnam when he picked up a live American grenade while horsing around, had a message from nine Senate Democrats who wrote that Bush had "a special duty" to condemn attacks on Kerry's military record.
103-103
O.K. does this qualify for the Darwin Award or what?
We threw that idiot out of office here in GA cause he drank too much of the Kool-Aid. Damn him and sKerry's cheap tricks.
Does anyone know who are the nine senate dims that signed on?
Max Cleland - still a dumbass
It was interesting to see that version in print. It differs from the current "official version", but is much closer to the story which circulated when he first ran for office many years ago.
The senators signing the letter to Bush included Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, Ernest "Fritz" Hollings of South Carolina, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Tom Carper of Delaware and Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, both of New Jersey.
Bad me.
He picked up the grenade that had fallen off his, or anther soldiers webbing, while exiting a helicopter. Perhaps he didn't realize the pin had been jarred loose, thus arming the grenade, but horsing around with a grenade is not an accurate statement.
Of course, it doesn't say much about the Rats' opinion of Georgians...that you guys are sooooo stupid that you all fell for the Republicans' shenanigans. It COULDN'T be that Cleland was doing a crappy job and you guys picked someone else, could it?
Huh? Gee, why hadn't I heard about that on CBS?
Oh, ok. Do you have any other information you'd like to add regarding this?
No it qualifies for the Almost Darwin Award. He would have to been killed in order to qualify
HOw did my beloved Dumb Dick Durbin miss attaching his signiture to that drivel?
Yes, but according to another thread you Georgians and the rest of us are still paying his salary because good ol' Pres. "Let's set a new tone" Bush appointed him to his $136,000/yr. job at the Export/Import Bank last year. Looks like it's a real easy job too, if he can be rolling around the ranch in Crawford today for the benefit of the partisan press. Shame on this pathetic grandstander.
If you were horsing around with a grenade and it went off, what would you tell people 35 years later?
I have no idea what the real truth is, but he is a Democrat. Just because we all feel sorry he was so badly hurt doesn't mean we can't be a bit skeptical.
Senators Sneezy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Dopey, Happy, Bashful, and Doc. Along with Moe and Curley...Larry was conspicuously absent.
Why didn't the Senate Minority Leader sign this letter?
Senator Daschle served during the Vietnam War for the Air Force Strategic Air Command.
Cleland can whine all he wants.
Meanwhile, "Unfit for Command" is sailing right up to #1 on all the best-seller lists.
Hey, Max, go play with a live one.
Thank you. A very impressive group. LOL
I thought I heard today that Cleland was given a reply letter from President Bush when Cleland tried to deliver his letter.
While sitting at their bunks, another soldier asked to see it. It was tossed to him but slipped through his fingers and went off killing one and wounding a couple of others.
The soldier killed was from Hawaii.
The military reported to the newspaper that he was killed in an ambush just outside of where we were stationed (Vung Tau).
The point is, only Max Cleland and anyone who witnessed it really knows what happened and "horsing around" with a grenade is just as likely as not.
I have a 14 year old neighbor down the street who is partially deaf and has CP. She asked me, absolutely serious, "How could anyone vote for John Kerry?" Maybe the Bush campaign could set her up in some, CHEAP, EXPLOITATIVE advertisement to win votes. Or maybe NOT.
It looks like the only one of these senators who was anywhere near Vietnam is Carper, who was a Navy pilot who "flew in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam war."
Did Kerry's message go off in Cleland's hand, too?
That's not true but it sounds better than "He threw the pin".
It's getting so I can recognize News Max and The Wizard thread-titles.
Is that a good thing... or a bad?
Dan
Sure take care of the enemy, but do nothing for Linda Tripp.
A group of Texas Vet met Cleland and ask him to deliver a letter to Kerry. It is reported Cleland refused.
Hey, this is Crawford, Texas. Company is always welcome. George should invite him out for some beer, bar-b-que, babes and bowling. Show some Texas style "Y'all (or whats left of y'all) Welcome. No need for politics in August in Texas.

Interestingly enough, this is not the first time that John Kerry has exploited crippled Vietnam Vets for his own purposes, as seen in his VVAW march on Washington, D.C. circa 1971 (above - (C) J.F. Kerry, The New Soldier, 1972).
5 Legislative Days Left Until The AWB Expires

Are you serious???? Pres. Bush gave Max Cleland a JOB at the IMPORT/Export BanK?? Are you certain??
I appreciate Cleland's service and sympathize with his disabilities . . . but his actions in Vietnam doesn't raise his IQ one point or earn him a lifetime ban from criticism nor the honor of wearing the Dunce Lifetime Achievement Award he so gloriously earned in Vietnam.
But he and Lurch have a lot in common . . . they've both earned medals for injuries sustained by their own hands.
Cleland is a pathetic little man who has made a career out of the fact he blew himself apart.
No, He didn't die.
What would have happened if the SS man had taken the letter, gone to the car and put sticker on it that said MOVEON.ORG, and returned it to max?
Just my twisted sense of humor ;-D
both hands were busy trying to pull his head out of his *ss (he's my senator, too -- unfortunately)
It sickens me to see someone playing the pity card.

Please see the repeat of earlier JFK tactics as documented in posts #31 & #32 above.
5 Legislative Days Left Until The AWB Expires
I'm from Texas, and married men do not invite people out for "babes and bowling" -- get serious.
Asked why the president didn't accept his letter personally, Mr. Cleland reportedly replied, "I'm stumped".
EXCERPT:
"Were proud of our service in Vietnam. We served honorably in Vietnam and we were deeply hurt and offended by your comments when you came home.
You cant have it both ways. You cant build your convention and much of your campaign around your service in Vietnam, and then try to say that only those veterans who agree with you have a right to speak up. There is no double standard for our right to free speech. We all earned it.
You said in 1992 we do not need to divide America over who served and how. Yet you and your surrogates continue to criticize President Bush for his service as a fighter pilot in the National Guard."

I don't know. I'm shocked his best buddy Carl Lenin didn't sign it either.
Lenin said being the Armed Services Chair(in 2001) is the same service as being a soldier.
It's disgraceful that Kerry disgraced our Military; it's even more disgraceful that Kerry now wants denounced and muzzled the outspoken few whom Kerry disgraced.
Bush said he wanted to work with both dems and Repubs when he was running in 2k. It has been reported by many democrats that he has done nothing but divide and shut out the dems...guess that's BS too!
I assume the Democrats to whom you refer are "reporting" about Bush being "devisive" are those such as Daschole and his ilk?
Yep
Thought so....Dashole is just the kind of "man" I'd like to have on my team /sarcasm
When we hear him complain or "report" about devisiveness, that sure is the pot calling the kettle black! : )
