Woman Accuses Kennedy Smith of Rape Thursday, August 26, 2004 CHICAGO — A woman claims in a lawsuit that William Kennedy Smith (search), a member of the prominent Kennedy family, sexually assaulted her in 1999, and her lawyer said Thursday that she did not come forward at the time because she was intimidated by his wealth and connections. Smith, a nephew of Sen. Edward Kennedy (search) of Massachusetts, was cleared of rape charges in 1991 and said his family and personal history made him a target for "outrageous" allegations. And the woman herself acknowledged having had a relationship with Smith some months after the alleged assault. In the suit filed Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court, 28-year-old Audra Soulias alleges that after a night of drinking in 1999, Smith, now 43, forced her out of a cab and into his home where he sexually assaulted her. She is seeking more than $50,000 in damages. "She didn't report it to police because she was scared ...," her attorney, Kevin O'Reilly, told WLS-TV on Thursday. "This is a powerful man; this is a wealthy man, and he's got the ability to really scrutinize you in the public eye. This will go nowhere and ruin your life, and that's what she was afraid of at first." In 1991, a jury in West Palm Beach, Florida, acquitted Smith of sexual assault and battery on a then 30-year-old woman he met in a nightclub. He said the sex between him and the accuser, Patricia Bowman (search), was consensual.

What I'm suggesting: William Kennedy Smith should be assigned a chaperone, and never again socialize with women alone. Both parties are likely to benefit.

I am glad to hear this woman finally went public. That is probably her best defense against an "accident".
That possibility had not occurred to me, but now that you mention it, it's utterly plausible.
This is crap. Have a guy rape you and then go back later for a relationship? Now you are suing him?
Folks, let's ignore the fact of who he is and consider that she might not be the most credible person out there.
