NEW YORK (Reuters) - Thousands of abortion rights activists holding pink and black placards marched over the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, the third day of protests before next week's Republican convention in New York to nominate President Bush (news - web sites) for a second term.
The march was organized by the Planned Parenthood (news - web sites) group to support a woman's constitutional right to have an abortion. The Republican Party platform supports a constitutional amendment banning abortions.
There were several other protests and at least two people were arrested in a pro-union rally outside a Starbucks coffee shop, bringing the number of arrests to 288 since demonstrations began on Thursday.
About 2,000 people opposed to the Bush administration's military and diplomatic responses to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America by Islamic militants, surrounded the destroyed World Trade Center site and solemnly rang bells.
"We felt September 11 was being appropriated by (Republican) spin doctors and they were turning it into a grotesque endorsement of world domination and domestic repression," said demonstration organizer Christian Herold.
The Republicans are preparing to make Bush their official presidential nominee at the Aug. 30-Sept. 2 convention. He will face Democratic candidate Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) of Massachusetts in the November election.
The largest anti-Bush demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, when an estimated 200,000 people are expected to march past Madison Square Garden to decry the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites) and other Bush policies.
In the predominantly Democratic city, about 20,000 people, mostly women, took part in Saturday's abortion rights march.
Chanting "My Body, My Choice" and "Not the church, not the state, women should decide their fate," they spoke out against what they believe are threats to legal abortions, birth control and health care.
"The current administration needs to stop putting money into unproven abstinence-only education and support real medically accurate sex education for young people," said 28-year-old protester Adrienne Luzeroff.
Political activists who oppose Bush's economic, environmental and legal policies have vowed to make themselves heard to visiting Republicans.
On Friday night, 264 people were arrested for disorderly conduct when about 5,000 cyclists rode through city streets, some past the convention arena, shouting "No More Bush." On Thursday, police arrested 22 people in three different demonstrations.

What a bunch of maroons.
Total Reuters propaganda! I walked over to watch the morons and was actually disappointed -- to say that 1000 were there is overly generous. They were supposed to have 3 concentric circles of bell-ringing twits, but the outer 2 routes were totally empty and devoid of them.
And there was noting solemn about these assclowns.
I have pics and vidclips that I'll be posting later.
"We felt September 11 was being appropriated by (Republican) spin doctors and they were turning it into a grotesque endorsement of world domination and domestic repression," said demonstration organizer Christian Herold.
What I'd like to say about this prick and his comrades would get me insta-banned here.
Uh huh. Okay.
Just think of how many MORE fellow protestors you morons and murderers could have had with you IF YOU HADN'T KILLED ANY OF THOSE MILLIONS OF UNBORN CHILDREN!
Ding-a-lings.
Geezzzzzz, the mediaWHORES were soooooo silent on the Boston protesters...CLYMERS!
see above
Weren't they told that "life begins at conception"?
Why the rest of the country hates NY......
"I'm John Kerry, and I approved these marches."
I'm sorry--what page of The Constitution is that on? Is it anywhere near the one that gives us the right to bear arms?
I agree.
I love it when I encounter a Bugs Bunny fan. And I agree the democrats are a bunch of "maroons" (and neo-communists).
You be carefull out there amongst those rats..
Stay safe Chick, Freep some losers for us, and have fun, fun, fun! Wish I was there.
I was looking for a post on the arrest of the two guys arrested for planning the blowing up of Penn Station in New York. That was a tragedy averted, yet another attack stopped.
Reuters still cannot bear to call them Islamic terrorists...
yeah, they say it is not a terrorist act, but one is Muslim and another is Pakistani???
These females will unfortunately be aborting their own kids, when an unplanned pregnancy crimps their style. Let's hope they find religion or an ethical belief system that condemns abortions.
Please ping me to your pictures when you get them posted. I appreciate your eye-witness report about today's bell ringers.
Do take care when on the streets with the leftist protesters this week.
There is only one reason that liberals support abortion "rights" (sic). It is so that if that horrible day ever comes when they assume total power; they will be able to justify, through legal precedent, concentration/murder camps as their socialist brothers in arms, i.e., the National Socialist Party of Germany (Nazis) did in the 1930s and 40s.
Thank you for what you do. I appreciate you being there when i cannot.
Leslie should be made an honorary member of the DC Chapter (broad hint). 'Pod
She's protesting because the President supports the proposition that she could keep her pants on?
Whoops - "could" = "should".

Chick, you, me, and the wife are decidedly on the defensive, but we'll show them not to take us for granted! Freep 'em!
None in these pics should ever need an abortion-eewwwwww !!
Who would...... yuck !!
... and a brutal "other side of the coin" - through their abortions, they are breeding themselves out of existence... something I've no problem with.
God help me. My life seems so mundane. I guess I need to get out more. Where in the Hell does this excuse for humanity come from. We had better looking humans at Woodstock !!!
Hey NYC GOP Chick -- why dontcha kick some arse while you're probing the neighborhood? ;-)
Not the time for politically correct b.s.
frankly I don't care if they were two Irish grandmothers in a wheel chair if you want to blow up Penn Station, you are planning to do so, you are a terrorist.
bttt to check pix later
"-On Friday night, 264 people were arrested for disorderly conduct when about 5,000 cyclists rode through city streets-"
Darn! There's never a bucket of thumbtacks around when you need one. ;^)
As my nephew used to say, "Ding dong, you're wrong."
March for Women's Lives(but certainly not for unborn children)
At least those two lesbian chicks holding the "It's not just Bush, It's Capitalism" sign are honest. Still though, most of these protestors are just skanks and sluts. I have other words to decribe them but I don't want to risk the ire of the moderator and Viking Kitties.
You gotta see this!
5{ter viewing the photos on this thread, I am glad they have all converged on New York. When the average American sees this crew.....can you say "landslide?"
It will be very interesting to see if the MSM gives overly hysterical accounts of the protests citing over inflated numbers or whether we will see photos such as these.
The message must get out to middle America!
Unproven huh? I only know of one Virgin birth in all of recorded history.
Shouldn't they be giving this stuff away.....do I smell capitalism?
