Out to Launch: Bush somehow puts Kerry on a swift boat to nowhere
NY Village Voice ^ | Aug 31 2004 | James Ridgeway

Things couldn't look better for George W. Bush. Even before the Republican National Convention began, the president had started to register a bounce in the polls—coinciding with the successful Swift boat attacks on John Kerry's character. Bush has accomplished what no one would have dreamed of in July. He has forced Kerry to build his campaign around Vietnam and events that occurred more than 30 years ago, while Bush has deftly wrapped himself in 9-11 and is fighting today's real-time war on terror.

At the Time Warner media gala over the weekend, James Carville blew up at the mention of Kerry's campaign: "They're a perpetual committee listening to aperpetual focus group, and it's got to change," Howard Kurtz of The Washington Post quoted Carville as saying.

Notice how a Kerry advisor admits that they expected the media to hide the Swiftee’s story:
Candidate Kerry, who after flailing about in the tides of Nantucket on Sunday quickly returned to his home, was on the phone for much of Monday attempting to shore up support and encourage surrogate attacks against his opponent on a day that showed support for him crumbling around the edges in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida and Ohio, all states that Kerry led in by as many as seven percentage points just two weeks ago.

"This has been just a brutal two weeks for him," says another Kerry adviser. "He had people telling him the Swift Boat ads weren't going to take because the media was going to ignore them. There are senior people around Kerry who were buying into all the press clippings that this was our campaign to lose. Well those people aren't going to be around after Labor Day. Heads have to roll over what has happened. Kerry has not been well served. And Kerry has not served the Democratic Party well, either. This has to be hugely disappointing."

Why is Kerry lurking low in the month of August? Because his character was carpet bombed by SwiftVets, he went to the first aid station (no Purple Heart here). So what is his next move? Lay and wait for after the GOP convention. Since Kerry did not present many original ideas of ‘saving the nation” at his own convention, and did not articulate his vision, but only tried to inflated his legend as some kind of world leader emerging out of swamp like Rambo with guns blazing.

It’s no wonder he and his wife are in some kind regroup think. However, since “They Were Soldiers” didn’t play well in Peoria, his next plan is to coop the Republican platform. The, “I was a Republican before I was Democrat cord” will be sung with these lyrics “I can be anything you want me to be, just vote for me, its all about me”. Kerry will have a critical answer for Bush’s health care, economic policy, military leadership, foreign affairs without ever having to come up with a plan or vision of his own.

Kerry will spread “fear through smear” as desperation sets in. Once again Bush will be portrayed as the destroyer of old people, children and single mothers. Once again we will hear we have the worst economy since the depression and no hope for the government to come and take care of the minions in the manner they deserve. No the SwiftVets won’t go away. Its lock and load time in the world of politics. The two John’s (out west we call it a two-holer) will make “One America” as an unintended consequence from a Bush victory.

You helped create this monster, Car-Ville, namely test-driving your spin to cover up Dem lies. Now it's eating the Dems from the inside, and they can't react to the new media in a timely manner - by the time the spin has been readied, it's already overtaken by events.

Right -- that line is ridiculous. Bush didn't force Kerry to premise his candidacy on four months' service in Vietnam. Kerry made that terrible decision on his own.

WRONG!

Kerrys resume for president was given to the American people, it contained ONLY 4 MONTHS IN VIET NAM.

This was HIS doing, not GW Bush. Kerry never ONCE spoke of his 20 year Senate record.

James Ridgeway, of the New York Village Voice states in his article that President Bush FORCED Kerry to run on the Vietnam war, while he, the President, WRAPPED himself in the 9/11 attack????? FORCED AND WRAPPED???? Since when and I didn't hear the President doing what this writer says he did. I would say these elitist liberal press people are losing it bigtime. They didn't get the Swiftboat story covered up the way Kerry wanted them too...now isn't that special??

"He has forced Kerry to build his campaign around Vietnam and events that occurred more than 30 years ago, while Bush has deftly wrapped himself in 9-11 and is fighting today's real-time war on terror. "

What does this say about Kerry's leadership? Bush "forced" Kerry to focus on Vietnam? And these guys are on Kerry's side?

Bush did not "force" Kerry to play the Vietnam card. No, Kerry decided that on his own. This wound, like two of Kerry's paper-cut Purple Hearts, was self-inflicted.
