Kerry gets lukewarm reception at Legion
Washington Times ^ | 9/02/04 | Charles Hurt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — John Kerry was politely received by the American Legion yesterday, delivering a speech focused on veteran pocketbook issues and President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq without addressing the attacks leveled against him last month by fellow veterans.
"I'm proud to be here, and I'm proud to be a Legionnaire," he said after saluting the several thousand veterans seated in the giant hall.

The audience politely responded to most of Mr. Kerry's pauses for his applause lines and gave him a standing ovation.
It was the candidate's first appearance before a major national veterans group since sailors who served near Mr. Kerry in Vietnam launched a series of TV ads severely critical of his conduct protesting the war and questioning whether he deserved his medals.
In addition, Mr. Kerry's campaign added more-experienced Democratic operatives on Tuesday, including President Clinton's White House press secretary Joe Lockhart amid Democrat charges that the old team was too slow to respond to the ads by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which have hurt Mr. Kerry's standing in polls.
Vietnam veteran Manny Mirailh from South Canaan, Pa., was among a handful of veterans who walked out as Mr. Kerry began speaking.
"We, we, we, we," he said, rolling his eyes. "When did he join the Legion? He must have a mouse in his pocket."

"He must have a mouse in his pocket."

No, just a mummified hamster he carries around for luck.

Very hard to believe.

I was hoping that a couple hundred folks would stand at ease with their backs to Kerry instead of just walking out.

At least there were two brave souls(only two) who did that at the VFW convention a few weeks ago.

Would love to see the MSM spin that.

This quote from Mr. Kerry in his protester days:

"We will not quickly join those who march on veterans day, waving small flags, calling to memory those thousands who died for the greater glory of the United States. We will not readily join the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars."

Should be among the first posts on any thread about him speaking before a veterans group.

Did he really say that? Good grief. I'm new to this, but he is truly a fake.

Yep it is in Unfit for Command and Limbaugh read it today. I happened to read the chapter it was in yesterday and then when Limbaugh repeated it, it really stuck.

Yes, read it in the epilogue from Kerry's 1971 book "The New Soldier". Here's the cover of the book, which mocks the photograph of the USMC raising the flag on Iwojima.

Had I been there, and were there a question and answer period, I would have stood up and said. Mr. Kerry, I study American History but am not an expert.

Let me say that you served in the military in behalf of the U.S.

Benedict Arnold also served in the miltary of what became the U.S. Benedict Arnold, saved what are now the N.E. states in a battle in the now State of New York by riding to the front while wounded and rousing the troops to success.

Benedict Arnold financed out of his own fortune the Great Lakes Navy which led to the states now bordering the great lakes being part of our Nation.

After appealing to the then congress for repayment of his fortune expended in defending this nation and being refused he tried to sell West point, and then finished his life in England the neation we were repelling from.

My question to you sir, is why are you not living in Hanoi???

Thanks! I have that linked saved on my PC from last week. Just haven't been free to check it out. This is my first election, so I'm not sure how the debates work, but how about we make this Kerry's first question?

Unfortunately, "we" can't make anything anybody's first question, because the Republicans unwisely agreed to have the debates moderated by all liberal propagan...er...I mean...journalists. Bush probably will win, but in some cases it will be as much despite the party as because of it.

I just watched it on CSPAN. KERRY ON CSPAN NOW: at vets convention The "standing O" was at the end, a polite rather quiet applause at the end of the speech as Kerry rapidly exited, shaking a few hands, but several he reached for refused to shake with him. .

I saw part of the replay on C-SPAN and the room was so dark, you could not see anything behind Kerry. Usually, the candidates give their speeches in well-lit rooms so that the media can take their pictures and move around without tripping over anything. But the way it looked, Kerry might as well have been in an empty TV studio with an applause track.
