I think the lack of clothing is due to the heat, they were allowed to disrobe partially to keep cool.
CNN is saying that some of the hostages apparently tried / escaped and that's what set it off. I am watching CNN and it's real time, this is going on right now.

Well, if you think about it, we have been very stingy with our support for Russia's tactics against their Chechnyan terrorists. They could just as easily be upset with us.
I'd like to see our leadership extend aid and support to the Russians concerning this situation.
This angers me almost as much as it would if it were to take place on our own soil. There just isn't any excuse for this.

Perhaps this is what you are referring to, with the idea that this hostage crisis has a direct link to Russia's inadequate support for the war on terror in Iraq. I doubt you mean the kids have brought it upon themselves. They're just kids.
Some of the "film footage" you are seeing is repeats of the last 15 -20 minutes..
It appears however, that negotiations are over, and this situation is going to be brought to a conclusion, regardless of the consequences..

Yes, covering up up-to one third of the screen does get rather annoying doesn't it. I can't imagine the brain trusts at the cable channels can't figure that out.
