What Alan Keyes actually said
WorldNetDaily ^ | 9/3/2004 | Joseph Farah

A lot of weak-kneed Republicans are running away from Alan Keyes because of his remarks about homosexuality. Weak-minded "conservative" pundits are making themselves look more "mainstream" by denouncing Keyes. Homosexual activists and their friends in the press have conducted a high-tech lynching of the U.S. candidate from Illinois.

It all started earlier this week when Keyes gave a radio interview in which he expressed support for a proposed amendment to the Constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

"The essence of ... family life remains procreation," he explained. "If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it's possible to have a marriage state that in principle excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism."

Now, if you read news reports of Keyes' remarks, you might be surprised right now about his comments.

If you tuned in any of the talking-head shows, you probably thought he called Mary Cheney, daughter of the vice president, a selfish hedonist because she is reportedly a lesbian.

If you heard any discussion of this quote anywhere in the establishment media, you might think he said that anyone who is a homosexual is, by definition, a "selfish hedonist."

Even if you carefully read accounts of this interview in "mainstream" press sources, you might even think he condemned Mary Cheney as a sinner.

It's not surprising you got that impression. Here is a sampling of the way various major news organizations covered his remark:

This is the way a determined, aggressive, partisan, biased pack of jackals cover someone they consider a real threat.

Alan Keyes is a black man who doesn't dance in their minstrel show. Keyes is a thinker who is not afraid to say what's on his mind and on his heart. Keyes is one of the most politically incorrect men in America.

Worse yet, right now Keyes is challenging one of the new darlings of the establishment press; Barack Obama, a conventional, "safe" black man who does what he's told and lives on the Democratic Party plantation.

But this is slanderous distortion. This is mean-spirited deception. This is character assassination, and it insults the intelligence of every American when my colleagues get away with this kind of mind control.

Alan Keyes didn't say all homosexuals were selfish hedonists. Read the quote again: "The essence of ... family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it's possible to have a marriage state that in principle excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism."

He said those promoting same-sex marriage are advocating a lifestyle choice based on selfish hedonism. This may seem like splitting hairs to those embracing the same-sex marriage program; as most of my colleagues in the press do. However, they are two entirely different statements. Every major news organization in the world unfairly accused Alan Keyes of saying something he didn't say. In other words, they lied. They lied big time. They twisted. They distorted. They even put words in his mouth.

Further, it wasn't Alan Keyes who uttered the name of Mary Cheney. It was the interviewer. He asked whether or not the universal rule Keyes laid out applied to Mary Cheney. He said yes, because it applies to anyone and everyone who takes the position that same-sex marriage is OK. He didn't condemn her as a sinner. That was an invention of the Associated Press, the largest news-gathering organization in the world, which disseminated this fabrication all over the planet to thousands of other news organizations.

Guess what? What Alan Keyes said in that interview is 100 percent correct. I may very well be the only commentator who has the guts to say it, but say it I will.

Thank goodness...

O'Reilly the Liberal and Greta van Peterson kept repeating the lie that he attacked Mary.

Finally, someone tells the truth. Frankly, I can find nothing wrong with the statement that Dr Keyes made.

Man, isn't that the truth. Thanks to Joe Farah for having the guts and the brains to write this.

This article is correct. Too many anti Keyes freepers were too willing to also twist the facts and/or probably were too lazy to get past the misleading headlines of the articles and dump on him.

I have the greatest respect for Keyes. He is a good man and a good Republican. He deserves better then he is getting.

Whatever the point of view on this, Judy Baar Topinka needs to be run out of Illinois on a rail. She's a breathtaking back-stabber who, as head of the Illinois GOP, was responsible for bringing, then turned Judas on him and hung him out dry. Her inability to vet Jack Ryan is the reason this problem exists. I've never seen this level of party mismanagement at any level.

You can also throw Judy Biggert from Hinsdale on that pile - another finger-to-the-wind country club "Republican" who was tripping over herself to sucker-punch Keyes when the cameras got in her face.

What a disaster. These dimwits couldn't wait to get rid of Peter Fitzgerald - a moral, principaled, and pro-life Senator - because he dared to oppose the expansion of O'Hare airport. The whole party is rotten from the inside.

If I have to look at Jim Thompson's ugly RINO mug one more time, I'm going to puke...

Alan Keyes is a nut. So he is a REpublican nut, so that makes it ok. Guess what: he does play in that minstrel show by advocating reparations. Why should this generation of blacks be rewarded by not having to pay taxes for a generation, because their great grandfather was a slave.

Tell me that isnt nuts.

Guess I will get flamed again. Actually even our nut is better than Obama.

Actually I don't even find anything wrong with the way the statements were interpreted by the sodomite press.

Selfish hedonism is one of the symptoms of Same-sex Attraction Disorder. When your entire self-image is determined by what you do with your genitals narcisism and hedonism closely follow. When you prefer to satisfy your own perverse impulses rather than live a good life selfishness in all other areas soon follows

Heck, I think Farah's explanation makes Keyes' comments even worse. Sounds like sex other than for procreation is "selfish hedonism". Anyone who has sex using birth control, has had a vasectomy or tubal ligation, or is unable otherwise to have children, is doing it for reasons other than procreation. In other words, if you have sex just for fun, that's "selfish hedonism". Hey, sign me up!

He's sounding more like a nut everyday. He could have made the same basic point by saying that society has no affirmative interest in subsidizing relationships that have no possibility of creating children, or in preserving the family units that created the children. It's not a question of morality -- its a question of economic subsidy.

But to reduce it to opposing "moral hedonism", as Keyes did, is nuts. I'd still rather have him than Obama, 'cause he's dead on with most economic issues. But this stuff is wacky.

I think he needs get laid.

"Finally, someone tells the truth. Frankly, I can find nothing wrong with the statement that Dr Keyes made."

Look, I like Keyes, and I agree that his remarks were misreported and distorted. But, taken in their own terms as a logical argument, they are still questionable. He is saying that the only possible to enter a marriage without possibility of procreation is selfish hedonism. But infertile or elderly, post-reproductive people often marry because they mutally care about each other and want to share life's experiences. Such reasons are different from "selfish hedonism".

While I do not understand Keyes' advocacy of 'reparations,' I cannot agree with you that he is a "nut."

Eccentric, yes. Understands right order and the history of philosophy, yes.

And, yes indeed, he is OUR eccentric, which means that he is far superior to the Obama myth.

Keyes said that 'those who ADVOCATE gay marriage' are selfish hedonists.

Your interpretation of his remarks is erroneous, unless you agree that gay "marriage" is a good thing.

Obviously, the remarks are limited to a particular context. For one to read 'elderly marriage' into his comments on QueerUnions is a stretch, to say the least.

It's what I love about Farah. He can spin so well that he supports what Keyes actually said and inferred while at the same time giving Keyes deniability.

I don't care how it was said. The comments would have been agreed with by the majority a few short years ago. But the left has successfully intimidate everyone into turning truth on its head. Now the stigma is on condemning homosexuality instead of on homosexuality itself.

Does anyone even know what hedonism means? It is simply the doctrine that pleasure is the greatest good in life. Tell me where that is misapplied to the gay marriage debate? I think half the people are outraged simply because they don't know what it means. The other half are weak people who sway with the cultural winds. Right now those winds say "if you condemn homosexuality then SHAME ON YOU!"

Important point about Keyes....

Disregard whatever the liberal press SAYS that Keyes said...

Look ONLY for full sentence quotes of Keyes...

Everything else is just spin.

Right or wrong, one must be careful of the words they use. Most of us, including myself don't know the meaning of 'selfish hedonism'. Unfortunately the "press" act dumber than most of the public!
