September 4, 2004 -- Tragic, despicable, inhumane, cowardly, barbaric, evil and astonishing — the deaths of a hundred or more people including children in a siege at a Russian school sparked strong words for the hostage-takers from world leaders. "This is yet another grim reminder of the lengths to which terrorists will go to threaten the civilized world," President Bush told a campaign rally in Wisconsin yesterday.British Prime Minister Tony Blair wrote to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, "It is hard to express my revulsion at the inhumanity of terrorists prepared to put children and their parents through such suffering."
World leaders focused on support and solidarity for Russia.
"Killing of these innocent people is an evil, despicable act of barbarism. The fact that many of them appear to have been young children murdered in cold blood is simply horrible," said the president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi.
A commission statement said it "regrets that the hostage crisis could not be solved peacefully, but the blame cannot be put on anyone else but those who committed this heinous crime."
Chief Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said news of the tragedy was received with sadness at the Vatican.

Why should the world be shocked? That stellar statesman, Yassar Arafat rose to power and worldwide acclaim by blowing up Israeli School buses. Children's body parts all over the place.
Yet he goes on to honor, respect, a priority for Presidents and wins a Nobel Peace Prize. What is wrong with this picture?
What, and condemn UNILATERALLY? Without consulting with our allies and friends at the UN? Might not be prudent...especially after reading the DU links provided by StoneFury. Effin' will have to nuance his reaction...scold the terrorists AND blame heavy-handed opposition to terrorists for making the "freedom fighters" do bad things.
Putin should exterminate most of this barbarian population and "repatriate" the rest to Siberia, there are still people in Russia who have experience in such enterprise.
One word wasn't used: unacceptable. Let me be the first to propose the un-politically correct solution to the most vexing problem facing the civilized world today, islamic terror. I propose the following: Excommunicate islam from the world's recognised religions. Period. Make the worship of islam or possession of the koran punishable by death. Destroy all vestiges of the killer cult, force conversion to other faiths, level their places of worship, and destroy those who defy. Some might find this drastic. It appears that way on the surface. Smacks of the nazi holocaust or something, but if you analyze it, it is the quickest, shortest, most straightforward route to moving into a peaceful 21'st century where minds aren't poisoned by the bedouin death-cult. Give Iran 48 hours to start dismantling their nuclear facilities or send them to hell at a million degrees. In fifty years we can make islam a thing only mentioned in history books like zoroastrianism.

It is not long past time for the world, and that means the world's governments to finally face facts.
The blame for what just happened in Russia, and for all the preceeding horrors of the WTC (both attacks), Nairobi, Khobar Towers, the Cole, Bali, and on, must be laid squarely at the feet of the Arabic states and the Muslim preachers of hate that inhabit them. The reluctance in these lands to silence these slimy purveyors of hate has been obvious for too long.
It has now become incumbent on us all civilized peoples to demand that these Mullahs, Imams, Shiekhs, and other assorted "nutbags of esteem" in their benighted lands are quieted forever.
It is now time for Muslims worldwide to understand that the desisre of the West to see Islam survive cannot be greater than their own. If the death-wish now so manifest in the Islamic world is not curbed by the Islamic world, it will not be incumbent on us, their victims, to insure a sweet outcome on their behalf. We would rather help them on their way.
It is time to bring the hammer down, people, and in so doing make Muslims everywhere fear us more than they fear the sociopathic death worshippers in their midst. Maybe then they will act.
It would be preferable that they act first of their own volition out of a sense of morality or even out of a desire to survive, but I fear that they secretly love and admire these murderers of children, and pray for their souls and for theri success.
If so, they are as craven as the murderers themselves.
Perhaps they think that in the coming war, they will prevail. They are wrong. When this war comes, we will not be able to wage war with the delicacy that we have shown in Iraq. It is up to the Musmlims now, whether they wish to live as civilized human beings, or die as pigs.
I DEMAND it. And I suggest that the entire civilzed world take a stand on this and DEMAND it; no more temporizing, no more excuses, no more politically correct BS.
Not a single additional act of terror anywhere in the world will be tolerated, and for every new act of terror in the face of our ultimatum, destruction 100 fold will be visited on the Muslims.
Moderate Muslims must be made to fear us more than they fear the murderous nutbags in their midst. Maybe then they will act.
They should listen to my wise advice and act now.
There is no evil beyond this.
