Diagnostic criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder (Fits Kerry PERFECTLY)
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ^ | 2004 (revised) | American Psychiartric Association

Posted on 09/04/2004 8:09:52 PM PDT by FormerACLUmember

Diagnostic criteria for 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (cautionary statement) A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

(1) has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

(2) is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

(3) believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

(4) requires excessive admiration

(5) has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

(6) is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

(7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others

(8) is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

(9) shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

I read an article recently that also said narcissism is probably the most difficult psychological disorder to treat or cure -- there are no drug therapies for it, and narcissists of course tend to believe there is nothing wrong with them!

True, but you can usually get them to drink a couple a fiths a day, which keeps them incoherent and harmless.

I've always thought he meets the symptoms of a sociopath:

"Antisocial Personality Disorder results in what is commonly known as a Sociopath. This disorder is defined by an ongoing disregard for the rights of others, since the age of 15 years. Some examples of this disregard are reckless disregard for the safety of themselves or others, failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors, deceitfulness such as repeated lying or deceit for personal profit or pleasure, and lack of remorse for actions that hurt other people in any way."

I don't think Kerry meets the criteria for Anti-Social Personality Disorder. Bob Torricelli or Harold Ikies for sure, but not Kerry.

It was hardly necessary to mention Kerry's name.
Just ask: which candidate best fits these criteria?

> ... obsession with 2 months 25 years ago.

"Seared"

When Kerry discovered that a nice reasonably safe open
water "PT" boat assignment had turned into an extremely
dangerous river missions (SEALORD), that got his full
attention.

Perhaps for the first and only time in his life, matters
were far from entirely under his control. You can bet he
fixates on that.

Now for the second time, matters are again out of his
control (the election results), and it will be
fascinating to watch how he handles it.

Actually there is a cure of sorts. You get about 10 of them in a locked room with one mirror.

Workd well for Larry Hagman, didn't it. And Teddy the Hutt (at least the incoherent part).

All this made me think of the best way we can beat Kerry.

Every time he has a rally, bring hundreds of large mirrors and post them all around the audience. He will be so entranced gazing into his own eyes that he will forget his speech.

Yes this fits Clinton quite well. For that matter, many politicians, celebrities, top athletes, etc.

" (2) is preoccupied with fantasies ...."

Anyone who reads Unfit for Command can come to no other conclusion.
Kerry has NPD and I bet we are not the first to recognize this.
Which is why he refuses to release his military and medical records.

John Kerry is one sick dude and I am mad as hell that the Democrats think so little of our country and our national security-that they would have this sicko at the top of the ticket.

i think modern "liberalism" (ie, socialism) is a bad philosophy, but here in NY, where there are many liberals, i know many good, honest, caring people who are liberals.
however, i think the people who are noticing kerry and clinton's narcissism are perceiving things accurately.

narcissists are almost impossible to treat. i have many patients who come into therapy because they have close relatives or bosses who are narcissists. the narcissists are so impossible that they drive people around them into therapy.
it is often commented on by experts on narcissism that many politians and leaders are highly narcissistic.
(some much more than others.)

we could just send him a throne, a crown and a mirror. he will then just sit there on his throne, wearing his crown, and gazing adoringly at himself.

narcissists are almost impossible to treat.

Filure to use proper case, however, is totally curable. ;-)

After reading the list above, it sounds like most any ambitious person. It takes a certain amount of self-delusion to be an entrepreneur for example. Nobody would do that much work without it. They dream big, borrow money, take unreasonable risks, are often difficult... About the only missing element is the insatiable desire for praise.

Given that our entire economy runs on such dreamers, it's hard to call it a "disorder" (unless one is getting paid by the hour to cure the incurable).

As well they should be. Such narcissists get things done, dare to confront enemies! They are a pain in the butt to idealist types, for sure, but we can't do without them.
