Melanie Philips: A War Unlike Any Other (An honest-to-God MUST READ!)
The Daily Mail ^ | September 6, 2004 | Melanie Philips

Posted on 09/06/2004 1:18:11 PM PDT by quidnunc

Suddenly, a far-away country about which most of us know little has shot to the very forefront of our minds and consciences. In a new century already steeped in horror, what happened at the Russian school in Beslan plumbs new depths of barbarity.

The carefully planned slaughter of hundreds of children, a massacre of innocents mown down inside their school by zealots who bayoneted one when he asked for water and who blew others up or shot them in cold blood, is a monstrosity which has had a profound effect upon those who watched in horror as the tragedy unfolded.

The hellish images — of murder, of screaming terror, of naked and starving children forced to eat the flowers they had brought to school or drink their own urine — will surely serve to define our terrorised age. It is impossible to comprehend how human beings can behave like this to anyone, let alone to children.

And that incomprehension makes us realise that we are dealing here with something that is as terrifying as it is diabolical — people who no longer behave as recognisable human beings, who are in the grip of a religious hysteria so profound that human life is of no consequence whatsoever, except as a means to terrorise the world.

-snip-

For I do not believe this was an isolated episode in a fight between Chechen separatists and the Russian government. This was Russia’s 9/11, part of the global jihad being waged against all infidels — Americans, Europeans, Russians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus or moderate Muslims — in order to re-establish the medieval Islamic global empire. It was, in short, further evidence that we are embroiled in a world war.

"I also fault Clinton... And I cannot understand why he slept at the switch!"

He slept at the switch because it was unpopular to wage war among his Dem political base. Therefore a military response against AQ would have cost him popularity and tarnished his legacy in the minds of his liberal supporters. So once again, Clinton put himself ahead of all else, including his country and the security of the American people. For this grave mistake in judgement, he should be forever regarded as a traitor to America.

"But instead of learning the correct lesson that the current horrors are the result of such a failure to act, the west has succumbed to historical amnesia over those previous attacks. It is convulsed instead by hysteria over the war on Iraq, with absurd conspiracy theories about Zionists and ‘neo-conservatives’ surfacing instead almost daily in the mainstream media and driving out rational debate.

And so the terrorists carefully calibrate their atrocities to exploit such weakness, confident that for every outrage it is not they but America which will be blamed. Those whipping up this hysteria, therefore, have blood on their hands."

Those who blame US - howarddean, algore, kosinich, tedkennedy, michaelmoore, and on and on -

THEY "...have blood on their hands."

Well, it was either your Friendly Local Muslim Cleric(TM)

post to the thread.

If not, the why the HELL aren't you reading SOMETHING ELSE!

Read some of the diary there as well. Pretty good stuff.

"If there is any one thing that more than anything else acts as a spur to more terror across the globe, it is the attitude of those in the west whose self-immolating credulousness means that they interpret every act of mass murder as further proof of the west's own wickedness. Every such act is therefore a double victory for the axis of terror, for which the willingness of the west to be so manipulated must surely have exceeded its wildest expectations."

I realized that about 0.45 seconds after hitting the
Post button the second time. But don't worry--it's a *homing* torpedo :-)

"Uh, and WTFR!"

I can guess what the TF stands for.
What do the W and R refer to ?

Loved your wit in '36.

Whenever I find myself hearing those words spoken to me personally, I just blink my eyes and ask, "Yeah? And, what's wrong with that?"

Do they know how dismal a life THEY would have if the flow of oil was interrupted? Damned fools!

Cheers.

Yesterday they sheepishly admitted, when someone asked for an update, that no one had been on the boat. This is almost as good as the empty vault episode years ago.

For this grave mistake in judgement, he should be forever regarded as a traitor to America.

I think that's a little harsh.

Why not just regard him as a "player", whose personal gain was the primary goal in everything he did and accomplished?

Not "It could be coming to your town " but "It is coming to your town"

...which is precisely why this needs to be front-page news.

I'm sure State has been on the line with Moscow for days, and Bush has a "let's cooperate more" proposal to bring up with Putin.

Just because nothing is happening in front of a camera doesn't mean nothing is happening period. The plan may be to wait until Russia agrees to increase WOT cooperation, and then wrap everything into one announcement.

I just finished Melanie Phillips' book. "All Must Have Prizes"--a scathing critique of the political correctness/radical egalitarianism that's almost destroyed England's once-enviable school system.

Liberal though she is (or was;maybe she's had a conversion), she's a brilliant writer & tough as nails. I hope this means she's a recruit to the Bush Doctrine. England needs her badly.

This, BTW, is the second superb article by a British woman writer in ~24 hours. On another thread I urged everyone to find Happygals' 9/5 post titled "Bush common touch is outreaching Kerry", by the Irish columnist Gwen Halley. Another absolute MUST READ!
