Actually, this story is "the most overblown thing."

The article to which it refers may be slightly embarrassing for Kerry, and we know he doesn't handle embarrassment well. But it is not politically damaging.

I doubt there's a plot here to make Kerry look bad. And assuming the "leak" is accurate, Clinton's advice to him
is perfectly sound. Whether Kerry follows it, or whether following it will be enough to win the election, are other questions.

It's silly to assume that Bill Clinton wants Kerry to lose. I don't give him credit for much, but I do think he's a loyal Democrat who has the party's best interests at heart.
I think the same is true of those close to him, Begala and all the rest. (Hillary with her ambitious is, admittedly, another matter.)

The Kerry "shakeup" is an almost equally unimportant story. The campaign will do what it does regardless of who is in charge.

The most important story about the Kerry campaign this week is simply the fact that Clinton won't campaign for a month and a half -- if he follows doctor's orders. But then, breaking rules is something he's pretty good at and loves to do, even at risk to himself. So even this may not end up being important ...

Yeah the last thing Clinton said to Kerry was, Okay John (you maroon), I have to go take a leak.

"This is just a start. Doofus has now put Clinton people in charge of his campaign. Their primary goal is to see that he loses and that Hillary is positioned for '08."

Yeah, talk about DUMB,
Gave hillery the rope, and even tied his own noose.

We knew it before that. In '88 we found out what kind of vile fungus grew in the heat and humidity of Arkansas...

Bubba was probably on a IV Valium drip prior to surgery. Then they put you out prior to surgery with a vallium derivative that is absolutely powerful. Talkative? Yes, definitely.

Yeah, instead of "I feel your pain", its "I feel no pain".

Odds are that there was no leak - sKerry just wants to associate his name with Clinton's, and the only that the press will even notice is if he proclaims "Leak Leak!!!".

I'll bet it was Clinton's surgeon, who I understand, was a contributor to the Bush presidency.

"The most important story about the Kerry campaign this week is simply the fact that Clinton won't campaign for a month and a half -- if he follows doctor's orders"

And that's good news for the Kerry campaign.

The only people Clinton could sway are those who are
already committed to Kerry - the true believers.

But Clinton could quickly turn off any uncommitted voters, or even those mildly disatisfied with Bush.

He is not an asset by any means, and having an excuse to have him off the stump keeps Kerry from having to ask him to shut up and sit down.

How many knives will be sticking out of Kerry's back by election night?

By then he'll be affectionately known as "Julius."

Let's see, advice offered by Clinton to Kerry becomes front page news. How can Kerry be damaged by something Clinton says? Especially when it is common advice that just about any political observer would agree with.

Hey, Kerry, nobody gives a rat's ass about your Vietnam exploits, be they real or imaginary. Surely, you must have something else you can run on from your 20 year Senate record.

You're right. Clinton gave good advice. For 35 years Kerry has planned on using his service as the centerpiece of his campaign. Now, he just can't admit to himself that he has no chance with that issue.

It's similar to a liberal's opinions in other areas. They formed their beliefs in the 60's and early 70's and haven't noticed that the world has changed since then (Thanks to Reagan, which is only one of the reason why.)

Because their beliefs are static, they think the world is static.

but he has never lied to me."

Yeah, sure.

Hey Kerry, you are a fool if you believe the Hill and Bill duo. Besides, you are the champion of leakers. Takes one to know one.

I'll bet it was Clinton's surgeon, who I understand, was a contributor to the Bush presidency

"And I said, 'I'd select Craig Smith,' " the chairman of the division of cardiac surgery.

Isom said his recommendation "probably had an influence" in Clinton's decision to go with Smith.

Due respect to NewsMax, but I gotta callon this one.

If this was a "leak" -- doubtful -- it was a deliberate one. Advice from their hero, who for reasons incomprehensible remains popular with their base, is something to be promulgated, not hidden, especially when uttered (bathos alert) from a hospital bed.

Bill Clinton wants Hillary to run in 08. So Kerry has to lose in 04. Simple as that.

"I do think he's a loyal Democrat who has the party's best interests at heart."

You are charitable indeed. If as skillful a politician as Clinton had the best interests of his party at heart, he would never have lost Congress and the governorships and the State legislatures, and the White House would have Gore in it right now.

Bill Clinton is a primary psychopath who has no-one's interests at heart, not the party, not the country, not hillary...only his own. All evidence suggesting otherwise is mere expediency.

I agree, CP, with several of your arguments, but a Kerry campaign strugglng to find its footing looks anything but stable when it reaches out to Clinton, imho. Their campaign has been a disaster and they can't afford anything that reinforces that image.

And in my heart of hearts I can not believe the Clintons would put the party before themselves.
