Russian vow 'a threat to everyone'

Sep 8 2004

Russia's threat to target "terrorists anywhere" is a danger to Britain, Europe and the rest of the world, a top Chechen separatist based in the UK has warned.

Akhmed Zakayev said the vow meant Russia may try to assassinate Chechens wherever they are, regardless of international boundaries.

And he warned that sent out a "very disturbing signal to all civilised countries".

Mr Zakayev, an envoy for Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, also rejected claims by Russia that he should face a renewed extradition attempt following the Beslan school massacre.

The separatist, who has been granted asylum, spoke out after Colonel General Yuri Baluyevsky, chief of the Russian General Staff. reasserted the country's right to strike at terrorists the world over.

Mr Zakayev said: "I think these are probably not empty threats, in fact they have already shown in practice that that is the way they do things.

"It is a very disturbing signal they are sending for all civilised countries.

"There are lots of Chechens all over the world and of course they talk freely about how dissatisfied they are with Putin's policies.

"To Putin, that makes them international terrorists. It is a warning to other European countries that Russia may come and carry out an assassination on your soil at any moment."

In February this year, two Russian agents assassinated Chechen rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev in a car bomb attack in Qatar.

Oh, and I suppose the "signal" the the moslems are sending to all civilized countries by their incessant bombing, etc, is NOT disturbing?

WHAAAAAT????? A Muslim speaks out?? I'm thinking I need to purchase stock in Depends - going to be a rush on them in the markets world-wide. I find myself truly disgusted with our government (state dept). We, you and I, have actually given one of the main characters sanctuary.

400 children were massacred at Beslan, on their first day of school with their parents and grandparents (this is a huge event in Russia, each of the children, often from families who have very little, wear their best clothing and bring flowers for the teachers, who are the subjects of great respect). How (and where) the Russians react is entirely up to them; they'll get no objections from this quarter.

Hasn't an open season be declared on Alqeeda troopers by our President?

These Muslim assassins want it to be a one-way street. They don't seem to worry too much about collateral damage as they seek out their targets of opportunity.

Maybe some of those countries should send the Russians an engraved invitation.

I think this may be the only real solution countries may have against terrorists. They all seem to draw their strength, direction and money from their leaders. I think Basayev's time is very limited.

I think there was a similar scenario after the Olympic massacre. I think that Mossad(?) sent agents to "neutralize" those party to the munich operation.

There are probably some pretty good arguments that this could be more effective than invading, then occupying a country like Chechnya. It can't be the only thing, but if enough of the right/wrong people were removed, to remove leadership, direction, financing and planning, it could help prevent another Beslan type operation.

the Russians don't have the same PC hang-ups the rest of us have...

Expect the Arabist U.S. State Department to throw a collective fit if the Russians get heavy-handed with terrorists, just as they do when the Israelis take care of their own business.

Russia's promise is not a "very disturbing signal to all civilised countries."

It's aimed at radical Muslims. Too bad if you're one.

Russia's threat to target "terrorists anywhere" is a danger to Britain, Europe and the rest of the world, a top Chechen separatist based in the UK has warned.

On December 7 2002, Zakayev returned to London, where he claimed asylum. The British authorities arrested him and he was released on 50,000 GBP bail, which was paid by Vanessa Redgrave who had travelled with him from Denmark.

On November 13, 2003 a British judge rejected the Russian request for his extradition, saying that it was politically motivated and that he would be at risk of torture.

On November 29 it was announced that he had been granted asylum in the UK.

No, it is a danger to all Islamofascists/terrorists in Britain, Europe and the rest of the world.

Everybody else is fine.

Note to Terrorists: If the Russians are after you, it won't do you any good to hide in a mosque.

I think they should be disbanded.

Sounds good to me.

[And he warned that sent out a "very disturbing signal to all civilised countries".]

What is disturbing is that civilized countries continue to allow Fundamentalist Islamic Terrorists sanctuary when they should be exterminated like any other pestilence.
