Police: Puppy Shot Man Trying To Kill Dogs
POSTED: 7:02 am EDT September 9, 2004 UPDATED: 7:05 am EDT September 9, 2004
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A man who was trying to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs made the .38-caliber revolver discharge, deputies said.
Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, of Pensacola, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
Bradford was being treated at an undisclosed hospital for the gunshot wound to his wrist, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.
Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old puppies in the head because he couldn't find another home for the shepherd-mix dogs, according to the sheriff's office.
On Monday, he was holding two puppies, one in his arms and another in his left hand, when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger, making the gun discharge, the sheriff's report said.
The revolver and a rifle were seized from the home, deputies said.
Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, Roy said. The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.
"That should never have to happen," said Bruce Rova, director of the Escambia County Animal Shelter. "There are so many options people have. We'll try to find them a new home."

One has to wonder about people like Jemian. I wouldn't want someone like that around me (and especially my dogs).
The euthanasia methods employed by animal shelters are nothing more than suffocation. How is that more humane than a bullet to the brain?
Read on in the thread.
Awwww! That is so cute! (wish I could train my kitties in self-defense, but you gotta get 'em while they're young, like this little guy...) :)
This is in the panhandle of Florida, part of the "redneck Riviera". Likely, just one county north this would be a customary and humane way of disposing of excess puppies which could not be sold. I think we should make all Americans work for a few months on a farm followed with a month at a slaughter house. More people would understand what is truly humane, or we would have more vegetarians, or most likely, both.
For the record I have never eaten a dog, though I was in Cambodia in dec, wait or was it jan?
Poetic justice!
Ditto!
Hahahahahaha : ) <<<me
Nothing cuter than a baby pig.
My idea of gun control is a steady puppy!
Have you had a gunshot to the head?
At first I posted this facetiously, now I'm beginning to wonder whether you really have had this experience.
Re your post 103, that is pure and simple bullsh--, sir! They use an overdose of an anesthetic. The animal goes into immediately unconsciousness and then dies. The same procedure is used in human executions.
You are thinking of a process used long, long ago.
Have you seen a dog in a gas chamber? They whine and wrestle around before scumbing. Not sure its because they suspect something is wrong, or they are feeling the effects of gas, but there is at least some mental anguish. My grandfather used to slaughter a hog every few years, one .22 shot between the eyes and the animal drops without a grunt. Pretty sure its just like when you pass out, the world just gets instantly dark.
Now now.
Seriously though we all view this subject according to our lifestyles and gender.
Of coarse situations/opinions are different.
I have had freinds of 15yrs here in Oregon and now that we are homebound and not out in the community as much as we used to be, we are out here alone. Most people can't handle the medical procedures I have to do daily to keep my son alive, so we don't get many visitors so the Labs are companions. That is our real world, just as it is a ranchers who has to put one of his stock down.
Thats how the vet does it, the pound uses a gas chamber. Many will hold and kill several animals at one time.
