Police: Puppy Shot Man Trying To Kill Dogs

POSTED: 7:02 am EDT September 9, 2004 UPDATED: 7:05 am EDT September 9, 2004

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A man who was trying to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs made the .38-caliber revolver discharge, deputies said.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, of Pensacola, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Bradford was being treated at an undisclosed hospital for the gunshot wound to his wrist, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old puppies in the head because he couldn't find another home for the shepherd-mix dogs, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, he was holding two puppies, one in his arms and another in his left hand, when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger, making the gun discharge, the sheriff's report said.

The revolver and a rifle were seized from the home, deputies said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, Roy said. The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

"That should never have to happen," said Bruce Rova, director of the Escambia County Animal Shelter. "There are so many options people have. We'll try to find them a new home."

Amazing, sometimes there is justice in this world. I'd love to adopt that pup.

I disagree with that sheriff. There is an abundance of dogs. They're 3 months old for goodness sake and apparently he has NOT found them homes. It would be better if he has his bitch spayed but killing them is better than starving.

I suppose you feel that way about kids and old people too.
You might want to look up how to spell "Muslim" before you spell it wrong twice on your tag line.

That's why I support arming puppies!

Great story!

When I was in college I watched a old mountain coot shoot 6 of his beagle coon dogs in a wire pen with a .22 rifle a couple of houses away from where I was living.

I called the sherrif's office and they said "it's not illegal".

The Animal Shelter will always take your animals in, where if they cannot be adopted they will euthanize them in a quick and painless way which a head wound is NOT always.

Also, there is always the Wal-Mart parking lot option - a litter in a cardboard box with a FREE PUPPIES sign will at least give them a shot at a good home.

True, some dogs are better than some people. I can think of one dog that's better than two humans right now.

People are supposed to spell better than dogs.

"moslem" is a perfectly acceptable spelling, and I will continue to use it myself. Although I prefer sandmaggot. Deal with it.

I'm on your side here. Regretfully I had to take similar actions with a pack of wild dogs born on my grandfather's farm. In my opinion many city folk have no clue about what is necessary in non-city life.

What is the difference between this person putting the dogs down and the animal shelter putting the dog down?

Here's an idea. Put them in the car and drive them to the animal shelter or the SPCA where if they are to be put down, at least it will be done humanely.

Sorry, anyone that shoots puppies does so because he is so twisted that he must actually enjoy it.

If you condone such acts, well...
