Continued immigration and a stubborn high school dropout rate have stymied efforts to improve literacy in Los Angeles County, where more than half the working-age population can't read a simple form, a report released Wednesday found. Alarmingly, only one in every 10 workers deemed functionally illiterate is enrolled in literacy classes and half of them drop out within three weeks, said the study by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

I've got no problem with helping people to assimilate into our country, but their aid should be tied into their ability to settle.
If you come over and you can't speak English, learn. If you pass, we'll help you out. If you fail, you don't stay. That's fairly simple, isn't it?
Immigration is a great thing when it's targetted and planned. But doing it like this is like a football team signing players at random off the street, paying them wages and them putting them out on the field in no order, with no training and no research to find out if they can actually play the game.
Duh. We have record number of first generation foreigners here. Some are illegal. These people do not speak the language, let alone read it. WE are importing poverty in this nation, and this state. There was a time we would only accept the creme of the crop.
We have not pruned our nation to remove the dead wood. California is 49th on level of education nationwide. We are allowing the "dead wood" to pull us down. Quality not quantity should be the order of things.
By the way. These illiterates are holding jobs that probably require computer skills and reading ability. That explains why there are so much errors in so many things.
"But I thought the Democrats were going to solve all that! "
No, but Bush's Open Borders Amnesty program will!

I fully agree. I am the granddaughter of Polish immigrants, but they certainly didn't get a handout when they LEGALLY immigrated. They had to make it on their own and it was very hard. My great-grandfather worked at a candy factory in the Boston area and would bring the old conveyer belts home to resole his children's shoes. They never were anything but poor but they survived by their own effort. And their determination allowed my father and now me to achieve comfortable lifestyles in a country in which our ancestors haven't even lived in for 100 years. That is success. I resent those illegal aliens even calling themselves immigrants. Immigrants have something to be proud of; illegal aliens don't.
If they can't read, how will they know?
Moov sowth to sandy eggo. Much bedder plase.
Shocking? There is a reason that Democrats rule in the big cities such as LA, NYC, Chicago, etc. Could this be one of them?
Connect the dots.
It's very strange isn't it? Why isn't the pride of our past and your Grandparents still prevalent? I like the story of the old conveyor belts! People like your grandparents made America great.
Here in the UK, we seem to be happy just to let people in and then let them vanish! Then they show up selling pirate DVD's in pubs, or smuggled cigarettes in shopping centres.
I'm proud of the fact that I'm from a country that other people want to live in. And I'm proud that my government is benevolent enough to grant asylum to the persecuted of the world.
I'm just furious that they think letting them into the country and paying them for doing nothing is where they think their role ends. It does no good to the people of the UK and it does no good to the immigrants who end up illiterate, disenfranchised and firmly entrenched in the black economy.
And it certainly doesn't do any good for the legal citizens of the country, either.
They tested American workers, or illegals? Hmm...let me guess.
-"despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent in public schools over the past decade to boost literacy rates..."-
Wow! Ya mean throwing money into the black pit of the public school system didn't help? There's a surprise.
Illiteracy is bad all over the country! My brother's business is in Harford County, Maryland. He had to hire our retired father to stand in his warehouse with a clipboard to make sure the high school grads put the right orders on the trucks for delivery. They couldn't read or write well enough to do their jobs.

Great idea! Of course this will also mean cutting out art, music and phys. ed. classes for kids who want to learn.
Who needs a literate workforce? Reading is not a requirement for those who'll Do The Jobs Americans Won't Do.
After all, they're here to add a few cents to the Bottom Line, no more.
And did they also poll hollywierd???
"..... the Reseda resident, who waits tables at a Carrows restaurant and wants to become (GASP!!) a computer programmer (!)
Gonzales emigrated from Guatemala seven years ago and taught himself to speak English by watching television programs.
But he often found himself confused by the simplest task, and had trouble filling out an application at a fast-food restaurant two years ago "
It is because there is little time for the "Three Rs" and much time for PC brainwashing.
That may be the reason Democrats rule large cities, but immigration policy is determined by the federal government. Who rules there? The truth is the will to DO something about problems created by illegal immigration does not exist in either party. What good does it do to blame one party while the other, that actually has the power to do something about it, gives a wink and a nod to illegals?
