Continued immigration and a stubborn high school dropout rate have stymied efforts to improve literacy in Los Angeles County, where more than half the working-age population can't read a simple form, a report released Wednesday found. Alarmingly, only one in every 10 workers deemed functionally illiterate is enrolled in literacy classes and half of them drop out within three weeks, said the study by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

Applause from Mexifornia for your true statement!
Six months ago, the author of this article wrote something called "Mexico joins hands with LAUSD", which I posted as "Mexico is trying to worm its way into the L.A. Unified School District [my title]" http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1100710/posts
As Mayor Hahn might say, emergency indeed.
(This does not surprise me in the least. Illegal aliens have no need to learn to read or write English because all their needs are met in the U.S.. They get free everything even though they broke our laws. And the ones that dropout of school after three weeks are probably children of these illegals--just following the excellent example set by their parents, after all.
Boy you have that right, they only show up for school for the free lunches!
Patrol the borders........!!!!!
That's all right as long as they can watch the idiot box and vote! That's all a citizen needs to be able to do.
(Why should they learn to read English?
As far as they are concerned the invasion of America is proceeding on schedule and, with the help of our complicate politicos, spanish will soon be the official language of the southern tier of states and English speakers will be the illiterate ones.)
No kidding.....
Has anyone seen the latest Wal-Mart adds? They are in English and Spanish.... what's up with that?
Fixed.
Moov sowth to sandy eggo. Much bedder plase
LOL. Oh Si chimin' in here. I was entertained when a fresh new batch of "migrants" showed up standing by a sign with directions to the local municipal golf course thinking it was a bus stop.
In other news, "El Ay" has a new county seal. Maybe they should just use that freeway sign that warns drivers to watch for scrambling illegals.
Don't worry --- they'll be taking off the English parts of them soon. Just like the store announcements in the Walmarts here are only in Spanish. But the Mexican flag is also being displayed on a Republican presidential candidates campaign ads.
Because literacy classes is just another freebie welfare program paid by taxpayers that's being handed to them --- they don't want it. They have no need in them, if they never learn English --- so what --- they get their housing subsidies, food stamps, free health care and a whole lot more given in Spanish.

True
Been on public transportation lately? Had one driver announcing the connecting routes en Español solamente. Told a bus-driver friend that if I ran into the situation again, I would lodge a complaint with the transportation district and suggest they pay the driver in pesos.

Gonzales emigrated from Guatemala seven years ago and taught himself to speak English by watching television programs"...
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh. *snap*
LOL
That explains the LA Times' influence.
Now Bush can justify spending billions to educate these illiterates and at the same time pick up a few extra hispanic votes.
