Lot of vets here on FR, but maybe not in the age demographics from World War II. Still, someone here may know someone who fits the above description. There probably won't be a 70th anniversary commemoration.

Gee, I wish my father had not died last year. He was the first US serviceman into Manila (he sneaked in, in advance of the other troops, since he was a Signal Corps photographer). As MacArthur's film man he won two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star. You wouldn't believe that a combat cinematographer could get into the situations he got into, but his citations decribe some extraordinary and inspiring adventures. He lived in the Chicago area and after the war helped many Philippinos immigrate to the US. Among them was the heroic Philippine doctor Perfecto Biason, who endured great suffering to protect our troops from the Japanese. How sad that he couldn't be at this ceremony for a general he loved so well that he named his son Douglas!
