Cornered by the news media as he entered the CBS News offices, Dan Rather lashed out at his critics and specifically at online reporter Matt Drudge.
Asked about a recent Drudge story that CBS News had been preparing an internal investigation into Memogate Rather became angry.
"Where did you read it? You should stay away from rumor mills."
"Somebody may be shell-shocked but it is not I and it is not anybody at CBS News."
"You know the internet is still filled with rumors. And I like a good rumor as well as the next fellow. But it's important to recognize what's a rumor and what's a fact. And sometimes the rumors are true and sometimes they're not."
The exchange was shown a few minutes ago on CNN.
More transcript soon.
Hey Dan, the rumor is that you are toast. Any comment?
Well at least that much is true...
heh heh bump
Then why did Rather announce this on the news if it was a rumor?
Now that's blather.
Bad news. Gergen is about to come out and question the timing of these document authenticity claims.
Earth to Dan: Forged documents aren't facts, perhaps you should consider that before airing reports based on them.
Alright Dan, minimize the impact of the new media. You do so at your own peril.
..and when you ignore those closest to the supposed source of your hit piece and go out of your way to find only those distant people who agree with you...it makes it clear you are not interested in the truth in any case..
That's funny!
Man. It is really sad to see a man slip into dotage.
Well, I guess he told us. What the heck point is Rather trying to make?
I just saw that on CNN. Rather really looked like a jerk & a DNC shill.
The internet has made Dan and his ilk obsolete. No wonder he hates it so much.
"Somebody may be shell-shocked but it is not I and it is not anybody at CBS News."It is not me, would be the grammatically correct locution says I, I mean, were I to give the great evening newsreader Ban Dather advice on his delivery, and I am not, because the first advice I would give him is to avoid staking his reputation on forged documents provided to him by partisans.
Dan, your fact checking system is shakier than cafeteria jello.
(Be looking for Danny to be heading up 60 Minutes III.....at least that is what the network execs will be telling him...LOL!)
How do you explain the Colonel's wife and son Danny?
