Local Man Called On To Verify Bush Military Records (Prof. Polt, Xavier Univ. also deems them fake)

Richard Polt, a Xavier University professor, was called on to examine documents from the 1970s that could shed new light on information about George W. Bush's service in the military.

According to Polt, who owns more than 100 typewriters dating back to 1890, the documents would most likely have been typed on an old IBM selectric.

Upon examination, Polt said the memos seemed to be from a word processor.

Polt also scrutinized another letter's format. He claims the latter is too neatly centered.

"When you think about some of the details of the documents, it just adds up to something recently produced on a computer," he said.

Several national magazines have called on Polt for his opinion. He said the only excuse could be that the documents were handwritten and someone produced them on a computer.

This is a different expert from the one consulted by INDC Journal.

Did CBS release the name of their "expert" who authenticated the documents?

Now we have multiple experts who consider the memos forgery.

I think CBS's "expert" was a handwriting expert, not a document expert.

Yes, Marcel Matley. But he appears to be more of a handwriting analyst than a document expert.

Yeah, but then you've got that nagging little problem of the supposed author being dead for the past 20 years. He could not have put his signature on something that has been recently typed up from handwritten notes.

Mr. Polt's should have also expressed the IBM Executive Model typewriter, which provides proportional fonts. The Selectric does not provide proportional fonts.

IF the forgery was done on a typewriter (it wasn't), the typewriter would be the IBM Executive Model, not the Selectric. Pass the word.

But I thought there were glaring differences in the signature on the documents, and other signature of Kellian. Someone posted them side by side.

Also, two of the memos were not signed, so how could a "signature expert" authenticate those?

All I know is what I see in the movies, but one of the first things people authenitcating documents is whether the paper, ink, in this case typesetting could have been produced at the time, when the documents are dated.

I wrote an email to CBS. They claim to be investigative reporters so they can bring forth the original documents and let neutral document examiners examine them, the paper, the ink, the impressions on the paper, the P.O. Box.

They need to establish which typewriter was responsible and if that typewriter was available at the TANG at the time. They need to find other examples of documents known to be produced in that office at the time and find an exact match for the typewriter. They need to explain each of the specific points made about the documents in detail. They need to report on the widow and son's views of the matter.

Of course, they won't do any of that because they can't.

What good is it to verify a photocopied signature on documents that have not been verified as authentic?

I think that the only thing Marcel Matley is an expert at is depositing his check in the bank. CBS should get their money back if they can find Marcel.

His wife and son are both saying thats it likely somone got some document with his signature on it, and forged it.

They have both been clear that they don't think these documents are real, and they have given several reasons why (not including the actual tywriter used.) Apparenly the good author himself, didn't type, didn't take him documents, and didn't and wouldn't write memo's like this. There's also questions regarding the wording used.

Photoshop. Which of course means the docs are forgeries.

The sad part of this is that last week at this time, the Professor could have taken comfort in the fact that he along with just a few others knew the deep esoteric details of antique typewriters more than most any other American would ever care to know.

Fortunately for the truth, he can no longer feel so special. :-)

No. There was no such expert.

The expert they had was asked about the signatures.

He was not asked whether the documents were authentic, only the sigs.

How do we make it clear to CBS that they are a laughing stock and will be hurt in the wallet? They must be elbowed off the stonewall.

Another thought...

This whole thing is unrolling like one of the CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) commercials that are now TV. It's hilarious.
