CBS, Rather stand firm on Bush story as furor swells Critics call into question cited memos' authenticity

September 11, 2004

CBS anchor Dan Rather vigorously defended yesterday his reliance on memos that appeared to show President Bush avoided fulfilling his service obligations as a lieutenant in the Air National Guard in the early 1970s, even as a controversy intensified over the authenticity of those documents.

The original report, broadcast on Wednesday's edition of 60 Minutes, sparked a near-immediate backlash on conservative Web sites and radio programs. Forensic experts subsequently interviewed by other news outlets - including The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press and NBC News, among others - questioned the authenticity of the documents, pointing to typeface and spacing features more consistent with modern computer word-processing programs than IBM typewriters of the era. Also, the family members of the squad leader who reportedly wrote the memos and who died two decades ago denounced the story, saying they did not believe the memos are genuine.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting today that an official named in one of the disputed memos for pressuring an officer to "sugar coat" Bush's military evaluation apparently left the National Guard more than a year before the memo was supposedly written. Late last night, a CBS News spokeswoman said the network did not have a direct response to that development. "We stand by our story," said the spokeswoman, Kelli Edwards.

These people have brass ones. They are presented with rock solid proof that their entire story is a lie, and they think they can just say "we stand by our story" and then stonewall. Can they really get away with this??

Occam's Razor officially kicked in at 100% duplication via MS Word.

Someone's head has to roll, I just hope the story sticks around long enough.

The longer CBS fights this the more harm it will probably do to Kerry.

Apparently, they never watched 60 Minutes. People try that crap all the time and get nailed to the wall.

Yup. Grilling the Bush and Kerry campaigns is strictly dullsville. All the good lies, evasions and distortions are on CBS.

It's about time that this part of the story is being picked up by some in the MSM. We've known about it here at FR for at least 3 days now.

Can they really get away with this??

History establishes that yes, they can get away with it. They've done so many times. The real question is "Can they STILL get away with this?" That is as yet unanswered. Other old media will be very careful about how far they push the story...because they know next time it could be them in confrontation with new media. I would not be surprised if even now, despite the preposterous position Dem Blather has put CBiaS' shredded credibility in, the story just goes away.

CNN Headline News just ran a Jean Maserve (sp?) report that was very pro-fake. Gad! Could Bill & Hillary have given their CNN minions the go ahead to nail CBS, Rather and the Kerry Campaign? Inquiring minds want to know...

Viacom cannot allow their anti-Bush campaign to unravel. CBS is the linchpin to their Simon & Shuster and Howard Stern Infinity intrigues.

Sumner Redstone, you shriveled little mini man .. rot in Hell a-hole.

Dan's credibility has slipped below Michael Moore's.

It is indeed fun to watch.

Happy hubris Mr. Rather, happy hubris!

Did CBS and the democrats go forwards with the story on the documents even when they knew they were fakes. Maybe they don't care if the documents are fakes. They may have an agenda and plan here to accomplish something. Some people may start looking at this furor and believe the whole thing just because CBS didn't back down. This is a very coordinated attack against the President. We are seeing a media coup d etat.
