Who Are CBS's Sources?

In a new attack book to be released Tuesday by Doubleday entitled The Family : The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty, author Kitty Kelley launches a broadside against the President George W. Bush, his wife, and his family. The book, which the White House has denounced as "garbage," features allegations such as a younger George W. Bush snorting cocaine at Camp David while his father was president.

Over at the liberal grassroots site IndyMedia, Pablo Kristophoros says that the disputed memos cited by CBS are in the book.

"The full details of George Bush's military service are in the new book by Kitty Kelley by the good offices of the Texas Veterans for Truth. This group has offered a large monetary reward for anyone who served in the Alabama Air National Guard with George W. Bush, but there have been no takers. There is a wealth of details in the 736-page book, and one of the over 800 sources is the Texas Veterans for Truth. Killian's memos and other information are there. The CBS memos are real and the proof is in the details."

In a memo to CBS affiliates last week which RatherBiased.com has obtained, the network said the disputed documents "were provided by unimpeachable sources."

In a report last week, the conservative magazine The American Spectator said that CBS's documents were possibly given to it by the Democratic National Committee.

Meanwhile in the most recent edition of Newsweek, reporters Howard Fineman and Michael Isikoff claim that one of CBS's main sources is a former TANG officer:

"Where did the documents come from? CBS won't say. But the trail pieced together by Newsweek shows that in a sulfurous season like this one, the difference between obscurity and power is small, and anyone can get a hearing. A principal source for CBS's story was Bill Burkett, a disgruntled former Guard officer who lives in Baird, Texas, who says he was present at Guard headquarters in Austin in 1997, when a top aide to the then Governor Bush ordered records sanitized to protect the Boss. Other Guard officials disputed Burkett's account, and the Bush aide involved, Joe Allbaugh, called it 'absolute garbage.' Burkett may have a motive to make trouble for the powers that be. In 1998, he grew gravely ill on a Guard mission to Panama, causing him to be hospitalized, and he suffered two nervous breakdowns. He unsuccessfully sued for medical expenses.

"Still, in theory, Burkett may have had access to any Guard records that, in a friend's words, 'didn't make it to the shredder.' Fellow officers say he wasn't a crank, but rather a stickler for proper procedure--a classic whistle-blower type. Burkett was impressive enough to cause CBS producer Mary Mapes to fly to Texas to interview him. "

Some Democrats are saying that the whole thing is a Republican setup. The Kerry campaign says it did not have anything to do with the documents.

Of course, with the book coming out on Tuesday and CBS remaining mum (for now) on who its sources were, only time will tell who is correct.

How many black dots are there?

I think it is politically insensitive to refer to dots as either black or white. ;-)

The only thing we would've changed is the statement that the writer received an advanced copy.

Remember the MSM meeting a month or so ago, where they discussed how to stategery the newshour? What story to lead with, what would come next, etc.. from August to Nov. And all in advance. How do you do that unless you know beforehand what's about to happen...what lies are about to be revealed and when. The American public has been played like a violin by the MSM for years, but this election cycle was the worst since the guilty parties are so desperate to get Kerry in, they've convinced themselves nobody will stand up and say, 'Hey, You're Lying!' Now they have to depend on dead folks votes. Somebody call Chicago and Florida to buy extra shovels.

That article was meant to be a sarcastic joke from the ABC News political team.

disputed Killian memos, cited by Dan Rather, are also in the book.

That means that the book is already discredited!

These liberals need to stop buying their dirty tricks from the "Acme Company". (The one that Wiley Coyote mail-orders his stuff from.) Everything keeps blowing up in their faces.

Well if the Killian memos are published, that changes everything. They MUST be authentic! (LOL)

That means the (whisper:)secret documents that CBS just obtained were "out there" a couple of months ago, and the powers that be have been waiting for the Kelly tripe to be printed, bound, shipped and ready to go before breathlessly announcing the just obtained documents and the bombshell (read: old rehashed) story contained within.

Fingers-in-the-pie bump!

These weren't supposed to come out so soon and they shouldn't have been posted as PDF's! No one should be that dumb!

Dry run, just like alQaeda, so they'll know what to do differently/better next time.

And if NBC continues with its play to provide three day's of interviews for Kitty Kelly's 'book,' add them to the
leftist media Kerry-pushers with CBS, AP, NYT, etc, etc, etc.

Don't watch or read these propagandists and let their advertisers know why. What is the value of any media are which is no longer trustworthy? Zilch!!!

"IndyMedia has been a pretty reliable source of information for this book. They seem to have some fairly good connections within the publishing business. It's a liberal site, of course."

Their role/non role in this notwithstanding. . .thought I would make a visit; have heard/read about this organization but never personally 'went there'.

A quick check of Indy Media and it's volunteer army of reporters/journalists/content share a radical Left/anti-America orientation.

Anyone know 'who' is/are the group that started this 'Independent media'?

Remember reading about this project; but right now; cannot find the 'who' of it. They do not mention names. . .

In their words. . .

[About Indymedia The Independent Media Center is a network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of the truth.

We work out of a love and inspiration for people who continue to work for a better world, despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover the efforts to free humanity.]

a sampling. . .Re September 11:

[Alternative Remembrances of September 11 . . .While September 11 may be nearly impossible to forget, the right-wing in the U.S. has seemingly dominated the significance of that memory, equating it with the imperative to invade and occupy other countries, and to maim, torture and kill civilians abroad. . .

On September 11, 2004, actions will be held in various cities in the U.S., resisting the notion that the memory of September 11 legitimizes State-led and corporate-sponsored terror.]

Again.. .'Whose money/what 'group' sponsors this outlet. . .anyone?'

I agree that we should be suspect of this report until we can see proof.

I'm not going to begin to say that the people posting here have the same background as educated journalists. We are citizens conversing in a respectable manner. I mention this because the underlying issue here is "contempt" for this underground forum. Rather and the old guard see it as a threat, when we are not.

I would wager that the vast majority of us would listen and respect a liberal point of view in this forum, if it were convincing and didn't have the tag line "It is well accepted that GWB did not meet his obligation in the Natinal Guard.
