LA TIMES: No Disputing It: Blogs Are Major Players (FreeRepublic.Com & Buckhead Mentioned!)
The LA Times ^ | Sept. 12, 2004 | Peter Wallsten

Posted on 09/12/2004 2:43:11 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

These days, CBS News anchor Dan Rather and his colleagues at the network's magazine program "60 Minutes II" are enduring an unusual wave of second-guessing by some of the public and fellow journalists.

For that, they can thank "Buckhead."

It was a late-night blog posting by this mystery Netizen that first questioned the validity of documents Rather cited Wednesday as proof that George W. Bush did not fulfill his National Guard duty more than 30 years ago.

Buckhead refuses to further identify himself, other than dropping hints that he is a male who lives on the East Coast — preferring to proclaim that the scramble to verify the contentions in his posting marks an extraordinary achievement for a medium that has operated more as an underground world of ideological venting than a source of legitimate news.

But Buckhead is vehement about one thing: He acted alone when he posted, to the conservative website FreeRepublic.com, what was widely believed to be the first allegation that the CBS report relied on documents that could have been forged.

"Absolutely, positively, on my own, sitting at my computer in my bedroom just before midnight — but not in my pajamas," he wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times. "But once I posted the comment to Free Republic I was no longer working alone, and that is the real point of the story about the story about the story."

That story began Wednesday, 19 minutes after the "60 Minutes II" broadcast began, when another FreeRepublic poster, TankerKC, noted that the documents were "not in the style that we used when I came into the USAF…. Can we get a copy of those memos?"

But, the thought controllers of the Radical Left haven't quite figured out how to handle this new way of communicating among the citizenry.

The Internet has taken away their control over "managing" the information allowed to be disseminated among voters, which allows citizens to choose truth over mis- and disinformation.

Watch out for Hillary to move to "regulate" Internet communications. The Liberal Establishment has to protect us from ourselves, you know. That's the only way they can hoard all the power unto themselves.

America's Founders would be absolutely delighted with the rapid communication of ideas allowed by technology. It fits in perfectly with their belief that if citizens were presented with the facts, they would choose truth over error. Liberty, they believed, depended upon an educated electorate.

Benjamin Franklin: ". . .printers are educated in the Belief, that when Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter...."

re: He likes to turn the sound down on a golf match and listen to cd's.)))

LOL--how very "Zen"...

I love to hear about home theatres and how people set them up. Buying a Monster TV turned out to create a lot of fun for my family--but I'm lucky not to have it in my family room, but in a separate building. I never thought I'd want such a thing, until I bought the DVD of Fellowship of the Rings--only to be very disappointed at the small-screen rendering. Then I had to have a Monster. DH says it's the most expensive movie date in history.

Signs appear to showing that the memos may have come from kooks asssociated with IndyMedia. Left wing radical blogs==trusted source, solid conservative talkers==unreasonable partisan naysayers from flyover country.

the capability to debunk an assertion put forth by a major media organization

It's no contest. Journalism majors are not the sharpest crayons in the box. They seem to be lacking in the integrity column also. FReepers have them beat - hands down!

the Dems with their allies in the MSM don't seem to mind at all how their biased news is not only tearing families apart, but dumbing down educational standards, our courts, rule of law -- and has been doing so since... 70s, by my watch.

That is an excellent point. They really have done terrible damage to so many things.

Some of the better threads can be found under the keywords greatthreads and livethreads. Some of those threads are also links to a lot of great threads.

The Space Shuttle Columbia's final voyage was tracked and blogged in real time on FR. That made the national news.

There were FReepers in the vicinity of the WTC attacks that posted soon afterwards.

As elsewhere pointed out, George W. Bush's Thanksgiving Dinner was reported here first.

The only "newsworthy" DU threads that ever get ink get pulled because they are examples of violent hate speech from liberals.

Of course the media "tried" to make a big story out of the gag photo of John Kerry with Jane Fonda. It was an attempt to discredit the genuine photo with "news" that there was a fake one floating around. Funny how that photo was propagated by the left (it was almost immediately pulled from FR every time). These documents are "unquestionable" though because they come from the ivory tower of CommieBS.

ROFL!!!

Wouldn't that be something....

The Slimes got their dig in:

"It was amazing Thursday to watch the documents story go from FreeRepublic.com, a bastion of right-wing lunacy, to Drudge to the mainstream media in less than 12 hours," said Jim Jordan, a strategist for independent Democratic groups opposed to Bush.

"That's not to say the documents didn't deserve examination.

But apparently the entire thing was cooked up by a couple of amateurs on Free Republic.
>The speed with which it moved was breathtaking."

I totally agree that the internet and the ability to access info is our greatest freedom, which is why there are those who want to shut it off.

I guess I'm a dork, but please, someone define "MSM", cuz I don't get it!!

I am quite happy to be in the company of lunatics......in their pajamas here at FR!

By the way, there was a nice little cult movie back in 1967 called "The King of Hearts" with Alan Bates. He found himself in an insane asylum (in France) with a bunch of FReepers --lunatics! It was a good movie.

Whew! Thanks for the explanation of MSM. In my professional world it refers to a dietary supplement or men having sex with men (MSM)...

...Kinda makes you wonder, huh...

I was against buying a huge tv like this because the only place in our family room was in front of our large front window. He bought me a Drake SW8 radio. I enjoy listening to shortwave radio. But, the tv is wonderful even if it has covered up our window. The color is outstanding. Of course, the new flat screen ones have great color, too. He is keeping an eye on them. When we remodel, we are having a new kitchen added, too. We are going to have a tv in it, too. We went to B'ham recently for him to see his dr. and while waiting for another appt. we went into one of the TV stores there. It is amazing what they have come out with now. Even with all the stations, there are not that many good programs to watch. I spend most of my free time on the computer. I am into family research so do a lot of genealogy stuff. Hubby backed up this computer on CDs since he is afraid it is going to crash any day. It is a very old one, but I am use to it.
I sure would hate to lose my genealogy FTM files since I have over 2900 names in my file. That is a lot of typing. I added about 6oo names while he was out of town. Typed it all with one hand while holding the info with the other hand. Boy did I hurt.

Forgot to say that one of the first movies we watched on the tv with surround sound was Twister or whatever the tornado movie was. Talk about surround sound, it felt like we were right in the middle of it.
