"I keep all of mine in a 55 gallon drum of salty water." I keep several in a PVC pipe full of cosmoline. Underground.

I am not a gun owner but I had recent experience with a shotgun that you might find interesting.
A lady friend who lives in the mountains has been getting visits from a cougar. I suggested that I take her shotgun to a gunsmith to make sure it is working right. It turned out that when I shucked the cartridges out, it left a small indentation on the primer. I thought this was alarming and the gunsmith agreed. When disassembling it, he said the firing pin mechanism was thick with cosmoline.
I did some research and found that one of the problems with cosmoline is that it is not good for very long-term storage. It contains shellac which tends to dry and harden and is very difficult to clean out after a few years.
