CBS blinked.
Capping a bizarre day in which CBS News insisted it would stand by the authenticity of 32-year-old documents relating to President George W. Bush's service in the Air National Guard, the network last night conceded it does not now know whether they were forged.
In a statement released just before a CBS prime-time interview that impugned the controversial documents, the network said, "Numerous questions have been raised about the authenticity of the documents. CBS News believes it is important for the news media to be accountable and address legitimate questions."
Then, at the start of last night's edition of "60 Minutes II," which reported last week it had obtained documents establishing Bush had shirked his duties in 1972, anchorman Dan Rather told viewers the secretary to Bush's commanding officer "flew to New York this afternoon to tell us she believes the documents are not authentic."
Rather said Marian Carr Knox, 86, believed the information they contain is accurate.
"You didn't type these memos?" Rather asked Knox on camera.

"Uh, no Dan, they didn't have Microsoft Word in 1972."
".."You didn't type these memos?" Rather asked Knox on camera.
She replied, "It's not the form I would have used and there are words in there that belong to the Army, not the Air Guard. We never used those terms.".."

".."I know LTC Bill Burkett and served with him several years ago in the Texas Army National Guard. I believe him to be honest and forthright. He `calls things like he sees them.' ".."
Sounds like something an Army guy might have typed.
But she may have typed the memos last week using Microsoft Word.
0 x 2 = 0
Excellent catch, that Burkett was in the Army National Guard, and the secretary says Army terms were used in the false memos!
Thanks
Gosh, and OJ is still looking for the murderer - I'm sorry, redoubling his efforts to track down the murderer...
Time to pour it on.
They must give up their source or sources of the forged documents.
Click on a region and the list appears. Some of these stations, eg. 2 in Houston, are already cutting the airing of CBS news, demanding that CBS come clean. Type the stations call letters and frequency, eg. "610 KFRC", into google and you will know if the station has an online presence. They will probably be even more receptive to your complaint if they broadcast online. Be especially attentive to stations in your local area. Email, phone, fax, write, and call in to talk shows. If you have time and inclination, you could even contact the stations sponsors directly as well.
Both domestic and foreign. Do the same google search as for radio affiliates and then contact them.
Do not let Rather and CBS off the hook. They must reveal their sources.
they are setting up their fall guy
And if their "fall guy" doesn't check out, they'll be digger their grave even deeper. I expect that's exactly what they'll do. It wouldn't occur to CBS in a millenium of Sundays to just tell the full and simple truth.
CBS and Dan Rather could put all of this to rest. Produce the original documents, let several experts examen them and let the chips fall where they may. But they refuse to do that and that calls their crediblity into question.
Looks to me like Rather Et Al have their middle member in a rat trap and can't admit it.
The unwillingness of them to deal with this squarely is really breathtaking. I am so glad to see the Leftwing media imploding, What we always thought has turned out to be right. None of them have any credibility at all anymore.
CBS will only come clean when the sponsors and affiliates start deserting them in droves, the board starts talking tough and shareholders' lawyers have filed.
Sounds like a Kerryism
It all depends on what your definition of 'genuine' is
That sounds like a Clintonism.
8-)
You know, I hate lawyers, and deplore most class-action lawsuits as doing nothing more than lining their pockets. But I will make an exception for this. I hope that CBS is sued and bled white.
