I-10 is a critical vein of commerce going from the east coast to the west coast. I-10 runs from Jacksonville, FL to Los Angeles, CA (or is it San Diego?) and it hits a lot of points in between.
It dissolved...

It went out in Frederick, and I think at least one other time. It is a fairly long detour, but still a viable route. That is, if the other bridge is alright.
What an idiot.
I-10 goes to L.A. (the last portion is the Santa Monica Freeway); I-8 splits off from I-10 in Arizona and goes to San Diego.
Wonder if that was the same spot? Maybe the repair job wasn't up to par?
If the other bridge isn't available and they have to detour (even if a short detour), that will mess with time schedules and fuel consumption.
We'll see. Hope it works out.
Mrs SLB's paternal grandfather was killed during a hurricane in Galveston on August 15, 1915. He was the conductor on the last train going across a causeway from Galveston Island to Houston. The storm surge and wave action swamped the train. He drowned trying to save his passengers. For some time the RR refused to pay any death benefits to his widow although they did acknowledge he was told to take the last train, no matter the danger. I will dig out the web page with the pictures and post it later - makes us appreciate the power of hurricanes.
Was the August 15, 1915 hurricane the one where all the orphans died, singing hymns to God, while they washed away?
If that's the one, I still cry when I read about them..once in a blue moon.
Isn't this the bridge that they took forever to rebuild because it was sinking? Or is that bridge the one that goes through Milton? (or is on the other side of Milton - been a while since I lived down there)
Ya got me, I'm not sure on that one.
Detouring to US 90 will probably add a couple of hours due to congestion. US 98 runs along the coast and may take a while to clear, but it is a possible alternative as well. Or go up I 65 and across on US 84, most of which is 4 lane now. Swing up to Auburn and Columbus, and you can get all the way to Jacsonville on 4 lane Federal highways constituting Corridor Z then US 1. http://www.georgiahighways.8m.com/gahwys/sr520.htm
This will be an inconvenience to travelers and truckers, but should have no economic impact.
I hope there isn't an economic impact.
Fox News reported that Highway 90 was not an option as it's bridge is damaged. Know another way?
Wow...last time I was in Florida visiting my girlfriend we drove across that bridge to go to the beach.....creepy
I believe the US98 bridges were taken out also. I-10 is the "main" east/west route in the south. I travel the I-10 route between TX and FL all the time, and now will have to face this mess.
