Rather: Critics Have NOT Attacked the 'thrust' of the CBS Story

Posted on 09/16/2004 6:14:29 PM PDT by The Bandit

Dan Rather said CBS' critics have never attacked the thrust of the network's story: that Mr. Bush received preferential treatment to get into the National Guard and stay stateside during the Vietnam War, and failed to satisfy the requirements of his service.

Well golly Mr. Rather, find some evidence that such a story could be true and then maybe someone will take the time to respond.

Why would I attack the substance of a fraud?

As to attacking the thrust of the story...you have it wrong there Danny boy. That is exactly what people are attacking...the CBS fraud is the thrust of the story.

Not only are the CBS National Guard documents forged, but the important points made in them are clear fabrications. Specifically, the two important points, harped on endlessly by CBS and the other liberal media (like the NYT), are:

1. Bush disobeyed a direct order of his commanding officer. The memo states that Bush is ordered to appear for a physical on May 15. Bush did not do so, and the media concludes that Bush disobeyed the order, and so was insubordinate. This was the major point made by the NYT in its false article.

There is only one problem: It did not happen. Other pilots point out that pilots were not ordered to appear for a physical. The deadline for the physical was established by Air Force rules, and was the pilot's birthday. The pilot was required by rule to appear for a physical every year on or before his birthday. Bush's birthday was July 6, so it would not have been appropriate to order him to appear for a physical on May 15. Of course, Bush never appeared for a July 6 physical either, but that's because he had already transferred out of the Texas Air National Guard by that time. The obvious conclusion is that the part of the memo which orders Bush to appear for a physical is a fabrication.

2. Bush's commanding officer was asked to sugar coat Bush's record and give him a rating even though Bush was absent. In the memos, Killian expresses consternation that he is being asked to rate Bush even though Bush was absent. The implication which is drawn by the media is that Bush's performance was substandard. The implication drawn by the Democrats is that Bush was AWOL.

However, that aspect of the memos is also a clear fabrication. The reaons is that Killian had no reason to be consternated by Bush's absence because Killian himself had already signed an order (which is clearly authentic, and looks completely different from the forged memos), which authorized Bush to transfer out of the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama National Guard. So why would he now be upset that Bush was not there? It makes no sense, and was obviously a fabrication by the forger. As further proof that it is a fabrication, note that the memo states that Col. Staudt was the one exerting pressure on Killian to sugar coat the record. However, Col. Staudt had been retired for more than 1-1/2 years by that time. Even Killian's secretary, who is a Bush hater, stated that Col. Staudt did not exert pressure on Killian.

Dan Rather's insistence that the orders may be fake but the information is true is itself an obvious lie. This whole episode really is worse than Watergate. It's like Watergate with a complicit media. In Watergate, most of the people went to jail because they lied to investigators or to Congress. As in Watergate, I think we need an investigation. Let's give these people an opportunity to testify before Congress and either come clean and admit they lied, or try to perpetuate their lies, and go to jail, which is what they really deserve.

Memo to Rather: Many critics have attacked the thrust of the forged memos.

It might help if Rather would listen to other channels than his own.

So, is Dan saying it's up to the public to vet his work???

So, he can just toss anything up and it's up to his audience to see if it sticks or not?

That's a new kind of journalism,,what's that called?

Bull Corn,

First, the whole gist of their story relied on the authenticity of those documents and if they are bad, so is the story.
Second, there was no waiting list to get into the program that Bush was in. It was pilot training and required an applicant to pass tests and physicals, which Bush did. Had he not, if is dad was Pope he could not have gotten in.
Thirdly, this story is as old as the sun. They went with this in the Texas Governors race and it flopped, they used it in the 2000 Pres. race and it flopped so they dusted it off and forged some documents and tried is again, strike three and your out of here.

Wouldn't attacking the "thrust" of the THIS story be about like attacking the "thrust" of a blow-up doll?
Sorry for not being lady-like. Laura would never say that would she? *sigh* I just keep trying and trying to be like her, and I just don't seem to get it.

I allways thought of Dan Blather as more a "Mouth of Sauron" type, myself, than an actual "Master of Lies".

A "Master of Lies" wouldn't have tried to fob off such childish forgeries. Danny -Boy is an "Associates-Degree of Lies" at best (and it's probably afrom Sally Struthers at that).

The fact that the MSM refuses to just come out and say how pathetic the forgeries are just shows they are all pushing the same lies. I hope eventually they find out what a house of cards all their lies really are.

Let's see...since the only real evidence (besides the fevered imagination of Dan Rather) was from FORGED documents I'd pretty well say there is no thrust.

Rush said it best.

"RUSH: Dan, you know why? Stop the tape. You know why, Dan, because you're using false forged fake documents, that's why nobody is taking the story -- what in the world's gotten into you? Nobody's taking this seriously because it's forged fake documents. How many times does this have to be said?"
