Woody Allen condemns 'comic, tragic' Bush
The distinction between comedy and tragedy often depends on the eye of the beholder, US director Woody Allen said as he opened the 52nd San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain on Friday.
If the US president is re-elected in November, "for me it's tragic, extremely tragic," the New York film legend said as he kicked off the eight-day event in which his new film Melinda and Melinda was screened for the first time.
The film, hailed by the audience, is a melange of two stories, one drama and one light romantic comedy, featuring the same heroine, Melinda, a name chosen simply because it is easy to type fast.
While much in life is like the film, where the way you view a story determines whether it turns tragic or becomes a comedy, Allen insisted that the rise of George W Bush has the making of a true tragedy.
"If you observe him, it's quite amusing, if you listen to him as he speaks, if you follow him closely it would provide you a great many laughs. But it's the perfect example of islands of comedy, comic moments against a very, very tragic background," he said.
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar will hand over a special award to Allen marking his contribution to the industry.
Following that ceremony, festival-goers will be served an Allen retrospective along with a broad palette of Latino pictures.
During the festival, which lasts through September 25, 16 films will compete for the prestigious Concha de Oro (Golden Shell) award.

Didn't he marry his daughter? Something about people in glass houses.....
I wonder if his daughter/girlfriend supports his views?
Woody would like Bush alot better if the president was into incest.
Well, Kerry has the incest/pedophile vote all wrapped up.
I know that one... People in glass houses shouldn't walk aroun nekkid.
Why is it all these sickos and perverts hate Bush so much?
Pretty simple really, Bush stands for morality, what they do is far outside the bounds thereof.
What do Woody Allen and Kodak film have in common?
Is Woody talking about his latest string of bad movies or his history of pedophilia?
What?
Woody, stop screwing your stepdaughter.
Didn't he make a movie called "Honey, I Screwed the Kid"?
I'm sure kerry will want this pedophile in his cabinet. Fo de chillins.
They both produce lousy pictures!
Pedophile. And maker of extremely boring films.
Poor Woody, this President doesn't have much in common with him like the last one did... So poor Woody can't relate... Too bad...
Was this based on GWB's position on gub control?
What does Woody Allen make when he makes love to his wife?
Well, I guess Bush has lost the daughter-diddling vote. Pity.
