“Who are you? Oh, Dan Rather. You’ve caught me off guard! I’m not giving any interviews right now.”
“I said that if the documents turn out to be forgeries I want to be the one to break the story. That’s what I’m going to do.”
“Well, I’m not going to comment.”
“Either you give me an interview or I’ll edit this segment and put it in my report to make you look like a fool and a liar.”
“That’s not fair, even though it wouldn’t be hard to do.”
“Come on, you know how this works.”
“Okay, okay, I’ll talk.”
“Good. Now, why did you decide to go ahead with the story when two of your four experts warned you that the documents were highly suspect?
“Well, our other expert, the handwriting expert, said he thought they were real.”
“Were these documents handwritten?”
“No.”
“Did he see the documents?”
“No.”
“So this handwriting expert verified typewritten documents based on a phone conversation?”
“You are portraying this in the worst possible light.”
“Come on, Dan. We never let any of our targets get away with this sort of double talk and we assign the worst possible motive to any explanation they give. You don’t think we’re going to treat you any differently, do you?”
“Look, Killian’s secretary said the gist of the documents is true.”
“But Dan, she also said the documents are forgeries. Even your handwriting expert said they were forgeries when you got around to showing them to him. Since they are obviously forgeries, you have no journalistic right to protect your source. Who gave you the documents, Dan?”
“I’m not going to say. I am still doing everything in my power to determine the authenticity of the documents.”
“Dan, if hypocrisy were an Olympic event you’d get the gold medal for this nonsense.”
“That just shows how much you know. Before there were all those pesky internet bloggers out there I ran a documentary called ‘The Wall Within.’ Six veterans told their stories of atrocities, including one who said he killed 50 Vietnamese and skinned them. It turned out that five of the six never saw any combat duty and the guy with the knife actually spent his tour either AWOL or in the stockade. I should have won the gold medal for that nonsense.”
