At least he can't be accused of insider trading. This is wide open.

Dear Steven W.,
I'd thought that top executives in publicly-traded companies had to file a statement with the SEC some time before they sold shares of their company.
That means that this transaction had been planned for a bit, and was likely not a reaction to the current crisis.

Saj, is Sumner just writing covered calls in this article when they say that he is "selling stock options" or is it that he dumped options that he'd purchased earlier?

Yeah- I picked this up online two days ago when I checked insider activity...I am sure word went out to other top and middle management NOT to sell theirs to prevent an avalanche of selling from others....

Dumping stock by a CEO during a crisis like this is prima facie evidence of insider trading.

While this could be directly related to the C
BS scandal of Rathergate, I should point out that the Viacom execs may be gambling on the situation and simply taking profits. They may believe the storm will blow over eventually, yet dump the stocks now and buy back when they think people have forgotten the issue.
I only state this because we always monitor stock sales for our company. Our execs do the same thing for different reasons, being that our stock values are sometimes driven by the performance of the two larger competitors.
A dip in value means they sell, buy back and buy another private golf course or helicopter with the profit they generate.

Hey Guys, isn't this insider trading.
He knows CBS is going to give all viacom a black eye so he dumps viacom stock.

In fairness, I'll point out that Sept 15 was a big IRS estimated tax payment date, and he might have needed cash to pay same. I suspect this is no big deal.

Great job!
Last week someone was wondering if any of the top dogs at ViaCom dumped the stock before it became a loss leader.
Maybe Redstone can be Martha's cell mate in jail.

This is what we've been waiting for. If Drudge publicizes this on his site/show tonight, the stock should start to sell-off tomorrow (whether or not Redstone's sale was based on the scandal). Once the stock hits a new 52-week low, Heyward should quickly lose his decision-making power on how to handle the scandal, and Rather might very well be forced to resign.
