Many Indians abort unwanted girls

BOMBAY
Stockbroker Amandeep Singh had a booming business in Bombay and seemed a happy man when he learned that his wife, Seema, had finally become pregnant 10 years after they married.

The childless north Indian couple went to a temple and prayed to the Hindu god Ganesh to bless them with a healthy son.

But then, a secret ultrasound test showed the baby growing in Mrs. Singh's womb was a girl.

"We want to have a small family with only one child, and we don't want it to be a girl," Mrs. Singh told a family friend. "There's pressure from my in-laws — we have to have a son."

So Mrs. Singh, 32, went with her mother-in-law to a suburban clinic and had the fetus aborted.

But the fact is that, in most cases, the decision to abort a female fetus or to kill a baby girl is made by the husband or his parents.

Brings a whole new meaning to terrible in-laws.

In the long run, this practice is going to destroy both India and China. There's a lot of predictions about how the 21st Century will end up being dominated by these two as they join the modern world. My guess is the real surprise will be that by the end of the century, it will be the USA that will not only still dominate economically, politically, militarily and culturally, but that the USA will also be rapidly overtaking them in population as it continues to grow (both through births, increasing life span, and immigration) while they began to shrink due to this anti-girl attitude.

There was also an article recently about the increase in STDs in India - that also lowers fertility rates of course, and life expectancy.

Because nothing is more important than cheap offshore labor. Unless it's cheap Chinese goods and cheap illegal immigrant labor at home.

I saw a news show tonight about how in many Mexican towns all the men from 19-55 have moved to America looking for work leaving their women behind to wait for the money orders.

Looks like lonely Chinese and Indians may have a ready-made mail order bride catalog south of the border.

This is what I do not understand.

Most Indians are Hindus and are vegetarians. They are vegetarians solely for one purpose--their religion teaches them that ALL life is precious and they shouldn't kill animals!

Then you see them here in the USA voting for pro-abortion democrats and in India they approve of abortion on demand and selective gender tactics using the test tube.

They won't eat a steak or some fried chicken and won't kill cockroaches running around thier homes and stores and think a cow is sacred. Yet they can murder children in God's Image!

I just don't get it?

Well, fewer women means fewer feminists, right?

Ironic, ain't it?

Abortion is murder. Period.

I still don't get the Chinese reason for one child per family. That would mean no one would have a brother or sister, and then no one would have a niece or nephew. No one would be an aunt or uncle.

That is so sad. It just blows my mind how someone could think a girl has less value than a boy. It deeply saddens me that the same advanced technology that can help doctors save the life of a child before birth is also enabling those of backward and flat-out-wrong beliefs a way to violate the natural order of things. At least the Chinese have realized what a dangerous place they're in with 6 boys per 5 girls. They expect 40 to 60 million "missing women". But I wager we'll never see the NOW gang shed a tear for them.

You are confused here, it is not Hinduism that drives these people to commit this crime, it is economics, at least 'idiot-economics'. It is the prospect of the parents having to take care of a child in rural India which is highly male-dominated, when they themselves are poor, and do not believe that a girl child can succeed in life. But if you look at the rest of India, women have every chance to succeed. Fools who masquerade as humans(these village-folk kind who get abortion done to female foetuses), don't get it at all. But this is rapidly changing. Remember, many in America thought it inept to allow women to vote, not centuries ago. Such ills arise out of poverty, and that's precisely why poverty is such an ill. As for the terrorist Islamics, that's a whole different story.

Favoring male offspring is hardly a new thing in these cultures. It dates back thousands of years. Families want a male heir so that they can pass on their wealth. Female offspring (in the absence of male offspring) cause wealth transfers to occur to other families. Modern technology gives these people the ability to "choose" whether to keep a child based upon its sex. And I agree with other posters: In the long run, this will hurt these countries because their population growth simply won't be able to keep up other developing nations where female/male birth rates are close to 50/50. Individuals don't see this because they are myopically focusing on their particular desire to promote male offspring -- but it has huge consequences to their entire society. Thankfully, this trend doesn't seem to be occurring in the United States -- which means that America will continue to dominate.
