RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie Statement on CBS
RNC ^ | 9/20/2004 | Christine Iverson

Posted on 09/20/2004 12:43:50 PM PDT by rwilliam

Washington, DC--Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie issued the following statement on CBS’s admission today that memos regarding the President’s National Guard service are not real.

“We accept CBS's apology for a breach of the journalistic standards that provide the American people confidence in news organizations, but some disturbing questions remain unanswered.

“CBS has now answered questions about the authenticity of the documents but questions remain surrounding who created the documents, who provided them to CBS and if Senator Kerry's supporters, Party committee, or campaign played any role.

“Did Bill Burkett, Democrat activist and Kerry campaign supporter, who passed information to the DNC, work with Kerry campaign surrogate Max Cleland? Did Bill Burkett's talks with ‘senior’ Kerry campaign officials include discussions of the now discredited documents? Was the launch of the Democrat National Committee's Operation Fortunate Son designed with knowledge of the faked forged memos? Terry McAuliffe said yesterday that no one at the DNC or Kerry campaign, ‘had anything to do with the preparations of the documents,’ but what about the distribution or dissemination?

“In an effort to regain the trust of the American people CBS should not only investigate the process that led to the use of these documents but they should identify immediately those engaged in possible criminal activity who attempted to use a news organization to affect the outcome of a Presidential election in its closing days.”

Excellent. The Old Media whores are too busy servicing their Parasite Party clients to notice that shiny little
bauble of truth rolling around under the bed.

Thanks, anyway.

I am not questioning his patriotism, but I do question his judgment, and his dignity for allowing himself and his disabilities to be used that way.

I question Cleland's patriotism. Ever since he lost his limbs due to his own negligence, he has had a vendetta against our military. I don't fault him for his bitterness, in fact it is quite understandable, but I do fault him for actively undermining America's ability to defend ourselves against our enemies. Cleland has been nothing short of malicious in his pursuit to destroy our national security.

An interesting, but telling anecdote.

I was intrigued by the term, since I consider myself a "Pajamahadeen", I thought I should try to show that I could actually do Internet research.

After identifying Kerryspot as the source of this term, I thought that I should "confirm my sources".

I sent Jim Geraghty an email. I got the answer on "September 16, 2004 7:41 PM".

I doubt that anyone at CBS is reading their email at this time of the night.

Who ya gonna trust?

Don't you think it would interesting if W. mentioned Vietnam in the debates....????????????

Something like, this country WILL NOT ABANDON our troops during a time of war. We have LEARNED THE LESSONS FROM VIETNAM........ A war, that was clearly highjacked here at home... And this country, WILL NOT LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN. Our SOLDIERS WILL RETURN *THIS TIME* to a GRATEFUL COUNTRY. So much suffering for the lack of will to follow through. Such talk emboldened enemies of Freedom.. WE WILL NOT FALTER, WE WILL NOT FAIL, AND WE *WILL NOT LET DOWN THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOMS* N - E - V - E - R - A - G - A - I - N !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is just so good that I wanted everyone to see this again.. Forward this to the RNC!!!!

The idiots over at DU are implausibly trying to convince themselves that this is the work of Karl Rove.

Occam's Razor would tell you the trail most likely leads back to Kerry's staff (if not Kerry himself), Terry McAuliffe, and the DNC.

They need to be pounded and pursued about this and the public needs to get the point that these crooks tried to torpedo the democratic electoral process by fraud. This is every bit as big as Watergate if not bigger.

John Kerry and Terry McAuliffe must be made to answer for this.

And neither is saying "We can't stand behind the authenticity of the memos" the same as saying, "we now admit they are forgeries."

In effect, Rather is saying, "We still believe the memos are genuine (or accurate, or substantive, yada yada), even if we can't prove it, and so should you."

Remember Watergate?

Heck of a job re-tracing the footprints of the players, pardner...

Btw, do you recall if it was Rather who'd in fact said CBS had been working on this particular story for "years"?

I believe this is what they call HUGH!

If they can link Kerry campaign operatives to the phony documents or the dissemination of the phony Word.docs, it would be extremely series and Kerry would be french toast.

I believe that all Freepers who have not already do so should set their beebers to stune ASAP.

These are interesting times we live in.

Of course, this is the Dems equivalent of Watergate--or Waterloo.

I wonder how many of those in the Kerry campaign will go to jail over it--like Liddy, Haldeman, Ehrlichman, and Mitchell did.

Does Mary Mapes have the tapes?

Will Tersa Heinz play the Martha Mitchell role?

How many books will be written about this Democrat scandal?

Dick Nixon is looking down from heaven and smiling.

Your points are well taken, MW, and you could well be right. But AFAIK, the only credible report I've read so far involving the DNC merely said that they had been shown the docs and passed them on to the kerry campaign. That, in itself, does not assign fatal culpability. Afterall, even the WH handled those docs prior to Rather's report.

But what Gillespie said today goes beyond that. He is suggesting that the DNC may have coordinated their "Fortunate Son" smear with the CBS attack and that the DNC took an active role in spreading this false information. McClellan's remarks were similar. All I can tell you is that if I were in Gillespie's or McClellan's place, there is no way I would make such suggestions unless I possessed solid proof of them. Running a bluff at a time like this would, IMO, be to risky. I believe the Republicans are just waiting for a challenge from the DNC, so they can say, "Well, since you insist on proof, here it is."

Hello,

Good questions! Please forgive me for a slight bit of pessimism. Watergate was driven (perhaps created) by what I now call the Old Media. They obviously smell blood on the water and will attack CBS. But, will they allow this to reach critical mass? It should, in fact, it is already a larger scandal than Watergate ever was.

On the bright side, did you ever dream we would have been able to experience what we have over the last few weeks? I sure didn't!

Glad to be here, MOgirl

Rough translation: the Democratic National Committee is guilty as sin over this fiasco.

(4) CBS should answer the question that all America should be asking; If you lied about this, what else have you lied about when we didn't catch you?

Correct me if I'm wrong...but didn't the whole "outrage" about Abu Ghraib start on...60 Minutes II?

IIRC, there was an investigation into what was going on there, that had started either in or before January of this year, and they were the ones who insisted on interfering with an ongoing DoD investigation.

Of course, everyone jumped on this...including Michael (2 Million Cheeseburgers served) Moore, in his crockumentary, John Kerry (a SELF-CONFESSED war criminal), Terry MacAuliffe, John McRINO, and of course, an inconsequential little peon known as Al-Zarqawi...who CITED Abu Ghraib as justification for beheading Nick Berg.

(This, of course, was followed up by Nick's already leftist father, Michael Berg, blaming Nick's death on "the sins of Bush and Rumsfeld.")

Also, does anyone remember the exchange that SecDef Rumsfeld had with She Who Must Not Be Named (and who is probably preparing her inaugural address right now), at that open hearing earlier this year? She said some comment about the photos, and SecDef said, "It's interesting how you got a copy of the photos before I did..." (someone please PING me to that original exchange.

I think that there is much more than just Memogate...there is probably AbuGate (not that we want to bring that up again, but think about it--started by CBS, adopted by the DNC, the 527s and by terrorists) and a host of other things.

If everything is fair, let's dig deep. Let's use (not exploit) this opportunity to expose the truth, and to expose, as Michael Savage puts it, "the enemy within"...if it is true that now people are REALLY paying attention.

42 DAYS REMAIN...ARE YOU REGISTERED TO VOTE?
