ACORN (tides) files "disenfranchisement" suit in Duval County
US Newswire ^ | 9/20/2004 | Sabrina Williams

To: City and Assignment desks, Daybook Editor

Contact: Sabrina Williams of Advancement Project, 202-728-9557, or Philip Compton of Florida Consumer Action Network, 813-877-6712

News Advisory:

What: Intent to File Suit Against Duval County

Who: ACORN, Advancement Project, Florida Consumer Action Network, NAACP, People For the American Way, Project Vote

When: Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 12 p.m.

Where: Duval County Office of Election, 105 East Monroe Street, Jacksonville, Fla.

Background:

According to a Florida statute voter registration applications received by Oct. 4 will be processed and those voters will be placed on the rolls in time to vote in the Nov. 2 Presidential Election. However, Acting Supervisor of Elections in Duval County Dick Carlberg, has informed voter registration groups and would be voters that any applications turned in after next week will not be processed.

There is more work to be done after a citizen fills out a voter registration application. The application must be acted on by the appropriate government entity in a timely manner and in a way that enfranchises eligible voters. In a year when voter registration efforts have been vigorous, some registrars have not been able to keep up. States and localities need to add personnel who can clear the backlog and ensure that all applications are processed in time. For those whose applications might be rejected for procedural reasons, they need to be given sufficient time to correct their applications before the relevant deadlines.

Investigations after the 2000 elections revealed that between 1.5 million voters and 3 million voters were not able to cast a ballot because of registration problems. As the 2004 election draws near, many of these problems have not been fixed. With reportedly high numbers of registration applications for 2004, these problems are especially significant.

I saw a story on the evening news (news4jax.com) where the NAACP hacks are planning to sue over a rumor that they appear to have started. The spokesman for the Election Supervisors office has repeated that these rumors are untrue, but the "base" is activated-or plans to be.

Our supervisor of elections office has been inundated with voter registration requests that have missing and fraudulent information--and now the NAACP is encouraging a demonstration against the office, whose staff are working 12 hour days trying to sort out the backlag created by these groups.

The line that caught my eye...between 1.5 million voters and 3 million voters were not able to cast a ballot because of registration problems

Is their plan to overwhelm election offices with fraud and lawsuits?

Yes, that is the plan. In some states, the Elections Clerks have hired more people and been working overtime.

However, I do not think that having a deadline is disenfranchisement. I suppose we'll see how the lawsuit proceeds. It might be thrown out, Depends how sick and tired of this everyone is, I suppose.

If you thought the New Left was dead in America, think again. Walk through just about any of the nation’s inner cities, and you’re likely to find an office of ACORN, bustling with young people working 12-hour days to “organize the poor” and bring about “social change.” The largest radical group in the country, ACORN has 120,000 dues-paying members, chapters in 700 poor neighborhoods in 50 cities, and 30 years’ experience. It boasts two radio stations, a housing corporation, a law office, and affiliate relationships with a host of trade-union locals. Not only big, it is effective, with some remarkable successes in getting municipalities and state legislatures to enact its radical policy goals into law.

I hope everyone, in JAX, caught The David Allen show last night. (1320am 9pm-midnight est)

His Guest, Erin Moody - with Supervisor of Elections office, was on last night telling David how many registration her office is getting.

She said they are getting THOUSLANDS a day.

Many can't be verified, are "questionable", filled out wrong or not completely.

I smell voter fraud big time............

I do not think that having a deadline is disenfranchisement.

The deadline, as defined by statute in the state of Florida is on the web page of the supervisor of elections office...clearly, October 4th. The frivolous suit is claiming that the office is stating something different, which, unless one is illiterate, obviously isn't. link

Registration closing dates for 2004: (registration will re-open after each election)
Presidential Preference Primary, February 9
Primary Election, August 2
General Election, October 4

You forgot to mention that major funding for ACORN is provided by Mrs. Heinz Kerry via Tides Foundation. I am thinking over some possible slogans for my sign for this afternoon's freep at Prime Osborne.

Don't forget about the Catholic Bishops who've given ACORN million via the CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development). Note to my fellow Catholics - let the collection basket pass you by for the CCHD.

Having a deadlind used not to br disfranchisement.

This day and age, it probably is.

The judges are going to do whatever benefits the democrats, wheather legal or not legal.

Want to see how the bodies of Americans look flying through the air as the result of an explosive device being detonated?

Elect John Kerry President or make possible the election of John Kerry as President.

Want U.N. troops in the streets of America raping your children, wives, husbands, sons, and daughters?

Elect John Kerry President or make possible the election of John Kerry as President.

Want U.N. troops in the streets of America robbing and plundering?

Elect John Kerry President or make possible the election of John Kerry as President.

So, none of these folks could have registered earlier? Like, FOUR YEARS AGO, maybe?

Or are these folks already registered in one or two more places?

I walked house to house for Jennifer Carrol in her run against Corrine Brown here in Jax, walking with a list of registered voters provided by the supervisor of elections. The number of folks who register from BUSINESS addresses would astound you.

I think the reason Duval was chosen for this lawsuit is that it is a heavily Republican part of the state, with a Republican Supervisor of Elections. The dems didn't want to raise a stink in one of the counties where Gore pushed his hand recount- they are all dem controlled- and in the case of Broward, transparently inept and corrupt.

On last nights news story, they interviewed an NAACP pastor who claimed that 27,000 ballots were uncounted last year. In Duval, we had two pages of candidates (including the communists and libertarians) and many (ignorant) people voted for two presidential candidates, spoiling their own ballots. Only to the dems can stupidity = disenfranchisement.

I have a conservative friend who was a poll watcher, who checked addresses when people presented ID. If it didn't match the address on file, they were given provisional ballots. ALL DEMS.

Thanks for posting this, Dutchgirl. Such efforts and attacks against the Supervisor of Elections have been ongoing; every attempt is being made to derail the smooth running of that office. It is an active, intensive, relentless effort.

On other fronts of the battle in NE FL:

The Florida Times Union on Friday Sept 17 ran the following ad on page B - 5:

DON'T LET RALPH NADER

Nader polled 96,000 votes in Florida in the 2000 election. Even if his vote is sharply reduced, it could defeat Kerry.

Nader's Republican allies in Florida are intimidating black seniors from voting.
