CBS Names 2 to Probe Conduct on Memos
LA Times ^ | September 22, 2004 | Elizabeth Jensen and James Rainey

CBS News today named two people to investigate what went awry in its reporting on President Bush's service in the National Guard.

The network said it had chosen Dick Thornburgh and Louis D. Boccardi. Thornburgh served two terms as governor of Pennsylvania and was attorney general for three years in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W... Bush.

Boccardi retired last year as president and chief executive officer for the Associated Press. He also helped investigate the Jayson Blair scandal for the New York Times. Blair admitted he had falsified stories.

"The two-person review panel will commence its work this week and will have full access and complete cooperation from CBS News and CBS, as well as all of the resources necessary to complete the task," the network said in a statement posted on its website. "The panel will report its findings to CBS News and CBS. The findings also will be made public."

CBS News admitted Monday that it could not authenticate documents it had used in a "60 Minutes" story that questioned Bush's service in the Guard during the Vietnam War era. The network and its chief anchor, Dan Rather, have apologized for airing the story.

The appointments came after CBS television officials struggled Tuesday with revelations that the network's news programs not only failed to report thoroughly on memos involving Bush's military service, but then committed an apparent ethical lapse by helping a top advisor to Sen. John F. Kerry contact a source for that report.

Several journalism analysts said CBS News producer Mary Mapes' phone call to Kerry senior advisor Joe Lockhart amounts to at least a potential conflict of interest — giving the appearance that the network had assisted a candidate in the presidential race.

The two political camps jumped on the newest information...

Why isn't the FBI investigating this? Transmitting fraudulent documents by wire in an attempt to affect the outcome of a federal election. Seems, to me, that the Feds should be involved in this.

Without a legal entity with subpoena power investigating this is all a big joke and anyone who thinks it is meaningful still thinks the documents might be real.

In various households across the nation, men and women in pajamas and slippers (and some going Commando) sit down with cocoa and schnappes, log onto their PC's and begin to do their own research on Dick Thornburgh and Louis D. Boccardi.

The Intelligence Arm of the Pajama-Hadeen, and offshoot of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy is at work, making sure all is on the up-and-up.

This would appear to be a delaying action to keep Rather
in his chair until the election. I'd rather they fire him,
and everyone within 50 yards of him. But keeping him
around works, too.

The Visage of Grima Rathertongue will serve to remind
the few remaining watchers that they are tuned into the
DNC Propaganda Channel, and that the corruption is not
isolated to the demented old fool on the screen, but
extends to the entire management chain.

Keep that in mind during commercial breaks, too.

What a joke. Obviously, the patients have taken over the asylum at CBS.

What the idiots need to do is to court Bernie Goldberg to come back, and let HIM investigate. I doubt he'd take the offer, though, he's too honest and forthright to ever work for them again.

I want to see an investigation as to why the DNC ran the "favorite son" ads at the exact same time the 60 minutesII lies aired. It seems like there is a gigantic link here. Ginsberg was forced to resign from the Bush campaign over a minor thing compared to this.

Agreed.

Whether Dan knew before hand that the memos were fakes, or was just negligent can be determined later.

Right now we know that Dan gave his "personal guarantee" that the memos were authentic and the source unimpeachable. That's all that needs to be known to take him off the air immediately. To most of us a "personal guarantee" has meaning.

Fred Barnes said today that while these two men are beyond reproach, there is no need for them as CBS knows exactly what happened, who did it, and why they did it. Barnes is correct.

There were so many bright red flags over this story that there can only be two options: Rather either knew the docs were fakes when he aired them, or he is stupid beyond belief.

So, Dan, which is it?

Mr. Boccardi seems to be a journalist's journalist. Old school. Worked his way up in A.P., apparently well liked and respected.

No fan of the Patriot Act, particularly when it involves reporters and their sources...

Entered testimony on the 2000 Elections debacle, standing up for the 1st Amendment and still admitting the press screwed up bigtime. Kinda interesting read.

Owns some stock in Gannett Co, mostly publishing and websites. Elected to the Board of Directors of Gannett Co., Inc., 2 year term ending in 2005.

Expanded the AP to include satellites and other communicative media. Felt it was stagnating with 60's technology as the 20th century was coming to an end.

Got the AP to re-open it's office in Cuba, met with Fidel to facilitate that little deal.

Nothing at first glance to indicate he's in anybody's pocket. CBS will want to make sure any investigations are purely on the level, even if it means losing a producer or two.

why the DNC ran the "favorite son" ads at the exact same time the 60 minutesII lies aired.

That's the thing - ads take weeks to acquire footage, edit, buy time for, and distribute. It had to be a managed campaign to smear Bush. I hope the truth comes out (and Burkett may be the weakest most talkative link).

I hadn't seen the "personal guarantee" thing.
Do you have a reference?

And I still contend that the "unimpeachable" referred to
misreading the White House response when CBS sent them
copies of the memos. The failure to impeach the documents
was seen as confirming them (and by implication, the
source).

Whether the "no comment" was a WH rope-a-dope, or the
WH merely wanted to look into it before making a formal
statement, it was the final fatal after-dinner mint for
the skewed scandal gluttons at CBS.
