Thanks for the info. I'd be interested in reading up on it a little, if you could point me in the right direction.
I suppose there could have been at least some recognition of hurricanes back then, at least among mariners, as they had certainly been a problem previously for the Spanish, sinking more than a few treasure ships, and I believe the word hurricane is from some Indian tribe. I suppose the Carolina coast also was hit regularly in those days.
I read in the Miami Herald this morning that the US has been keeping records of hurricanes since 1851, if Jeanne comes ashore, it'll be the first time since records were kept that Florida got hit by 4 of the things.

I hope people are not being complacent!
Called my mom in Ormond Beach. Ormond Beach is the next town north of Daytona Beach. She lives 3 blocks from the shore of the Atlantic. She's -East- of the Halifax River which means she is in the minatory evacuation zone.
Told her to pack up tonight and get to a shelter by Saturday afternoon. She doesn't drive and said some "friends" may drive her inland.
I've read of way too many instances where people promise a ride or shelter and then suddenly vanish when things get "serious". It happened to Mom a couple of years ago. Told her to forget the "friends" and get to a shelter early via bus.
IMHO the worst case scenario is if Jeanne goes right up the East Coast raking every city and beach in it's path.
Here's the latest sit-rep from Volusia County Government. Includes the Cities of Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, Flagler Beach, New Smyrna, Deltona and many others

Going to bed. Pressure has dropped 5MB in the past day. If this high pressure was building south and west it has a strange way of doing so.

I think the numbers of stuff such a lumber is going to be way up...one of my hobbies is watching trains, and I can tell you there are lots of trains heading to the south east with plywood....lots and lots of plywood, coming from the Pacific Northwest and Canada.

We have one, but it's a crude variation that my son built from a kit a few years ago.
The ones that use AA batteries as inexpensive and it's amazing how long they last on 4 AA's.
We've got a couple, and they're inexpensive. The kind you use in the shower that are waterproof use AA's.
We also have a cooler that has a removable radio attached, that radio uses a 9 volt.

Thanks, tutstar.
Jeanne ping!
This is the old Ivan ping list. I'll use it from now on as an all-purpose Hurricane Ping List. If you want on or off, FReep-mail me.
Yet another storm headed on a very clear path straight towards me. If the current track holds (luckily, it never does) It will be right in my lap at about 8am Monday. Regardless, someone in Florida is going to get hit.
Yay, fun!

Thanx for the ping!
I don't trust the tracking ... I think Jeanne's going to cut right across the state and go into the Gulf.

Thanks for the ping...was hoping someone would remember to notify me. ;o)
Your right these darn hurricanes change course...even though they're sure of its path presently bet she starts moving north soon....and goes up the coast of Florida instead of going inward then turning north.

thank you -- those have been **so** appreciated.
I am still awed and so grateful to God that the storm deaths from Charley were not higher in all the wreckage, that folks south of projected path really did heed the warnings.

the last couple of satellite photos are showing a northward jog...it may continue, but the hurricane being in your lap on Monday is looking more and more certain I am afraid...
