Yup. He tried to go to school in Europe (I think) and could not get the deferment to do it.

Don't know about "several" although it's certainly possible that he had educational deferments because he was in college. However, we do know that he requested a deferment after graduation to study in France, which was denied, after which he signed up for the Navy.

He received 4 and got turned down for the 5th. At which point he joined the Navy Reserve rather than get drafted in the Army.

Then he volunteered for what was at the time, rather safe costal patrol duty. Unfortunately for Kerry, after he had volunteered for Swift Boat duty, the boats were assigned to the more dangerous river duty.

What's all this crap about deferments??? John Kerry was in Vietnam! He's a by-God hero! No, really! REALLY!! He said so himself! He's got many, many takes of his combat re-enactments to prove it! He.... he.... um.... eh.

So this is what the dims made a big stink over concerning Cheney, the difference being Cheney was successful getting a deferrment whereas sKerry was not.

Any way to prove it? I'd love to jam that down some liberal throats.

Do we know that? We know he applied for post-grad study
in Paris (and was denied), but did he actually need
deferments for all 4 undergrad years?

When did the draft kick in during the Vietnam war?

Kerry enlisted in the USNR in Feb 66, so he would have
been a freshman in Sep 61. I suspect that JFK#1 was still
relying on volunteers for RVN duty then.

Like every other college student in America Kerry applied for and was granted a IIS student deferment from selective service. This was renewable yearly and was granted if the college forwarded a form saying you were a successful full time student. Kerry applied for a deferment for grad school. It was not granted. That's when he enlisted in the Naval Reserve OCS Program.

George Bush received the same IIS deferments and upon graduation Pres. Bush joined the TANG as a pilot trainee.Kerry owed the Navy three years or four years active duty, when I investigated it for myself in '69 it was three. Bush served two plus active.

He joined the Naval Reserve. How did he manage that?

Did Kerry get any preferential treatment per his assignment to the then-safe swiftboat duty? I would think it might have been a duty with a long, long line of applicants. Just curious.
