A Queens man was arrested after police found substances used in the manufacturing of explosives in his van near the Atlantic Beach Bridge on Long Island.
Nassau County Police say an officer on the way to another assignment saw a van parked near some high reeds off Route 878 in Lawrence at about 6:30 Friday night. 56-year-old Hippocrates Koutosoupakis of Astoria was found nearby.
Police say the potentially dangerous substances were inside Koutosoupakis's van and that it "was his intention to cause an explosion."
Authorities say Koutosopakis was wearing military-style suspenders with pockets containing tools and a propane torch. He also allegedly had a stun gun.
The Daily News reports this morning, Koutosopakis also had with him rappelling gear and a map of nearby Kennedy airport. Also, a search of his home turned up several improvised explosives.
Koutosopakis is a Vietnam veteran with no prior criminal record, according to the News.
He's charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree criminal possession of a dangerous instrument.
The nearby Atlantic Beach Bridge was closed for 16 hours as a precaution but reopened after investigators found nothing.
A man with a van DOWN BY THE RIVER?
Nothing's too good for him!
Whackjob alert, or a convert to the religion of peace?
OH MY GOD! Military style suspenders - no doubt semiautomaticmachinesuspenders. Only in a liberal sh!thole like NYC would the guy's suspenders be cause for comment.
What's the difference?
Information only PING
Poor excuse for both of them.
ping
They might have been referring to LBE - still good gear, and easily available in the flea markets.
obviously Assault Suspenders!
Post 9/11 has been really hard on the whackjobs as well as the garden-variety terrorists.
Whoa. Why isn't FNC reporting this?
"substances used in the manufacturing of explosives"
does not equal having ACTUAL explosives (to a Peacenik Liberal).
Kinda like stockpiles of substances used in the manufacture of WMD, found in various ammunition dumps around Iraq, does not equal having ACTUAL WMD (to a Peacenik Liberal).
Har Har
Whack job!
He may have served w/Kerry.
There is Queens, NY ham radio operator by same name (??????)
The guy sure has a weird name. I wonder if he is a convert, or just a whacked out Lefty. Does anyone know if the Bush motorcade was scheduled to pass on that bridge sometime soon?
Just a possibility, you never know.
Ping..............
I'm sure they are, but my comment was to the reporter's hysteria (and the hysteria of NYC people in general) getting all worked up over what the guy was wearing as much as any (purported) explosives - like if he were wearing blue jeans or cammos or a Brooks Brother's suit made any difference. (Of course in NY it might make a difference, since NY is the land of appearance over substance - feel good legislation and the most liberal state in the US :-)
Dear God...why have these not been banned?
In all seriousness, you would need a truck load of explosive to even scratch the paint on any major modern bridge...
